For example, i was 3 weeks behind, it synced reasonably quick, but upon reaching 10 days or so, it took forever.

I think it has something to do with less processing of old historical blocks. I think it spends less time with processing and validating older blocks than it does with new ones because old blocks are already valid while newer ones may not be valid so those need to be validated as well.

If your having problems downloading try using a different wallet or something that is a light version of bitcoin qt if using. I had enough of long waits and massive amounts of data being used and moved over to Bither light version and simple enough to use and also import private keys. Is available on bitcoins website under wallets. If wanting to use qt you could look at port forwarding or finding some fast nodes to download from. Even then with this I had a bunch of problems from speed and also keeping running without crashing. So ended up moving away from it because it was getting very annoying.

The blocks that were under the stress attack are a mess, maybe it has to do with that.

No idea but even I tried to re download to see if my addresses have any coins in or payments to wallet goto about 80% completed and crash re opend and said re index option so waste of time.. Think going to take all my private keys store them import to new wallet am currently using and not qt and call it quits with qt until stuff has been resolved or things run a lot smoother.

I've always assumed this is because there are more and more transactions as we get closer to the current block.  Bitcoin wasn't very popular in 2011, and so on.  Blocks from late 2014 forward start getting pretty big, then, with the "stress tests" of 2015, we've seen a lot more transactions than we used to.
