I bought PCI-e 1x Extenders, and connect videocard with it. But if I plug cable to 16x connector, motherboard thinks that card not connected, and if i plug to 1x connector then it works.
My motherboard is 890FXA-GD70 and video is radeon 5870, 6950 and 5970

What is problem?

Hi there, I just purchased some PCI 1X extenders too. Check out this blog post as to how to get it to work http://blog.zorinaq.com/?e=42

I have tried this on an Asus P5k motherboard with 2 different pieces of wire and 2 different PCI-e 1x to PCI-e 16x converters but the GPU does not show up on the device list under Linux (AMDOverdriveCtrl -h shows only 2 of my 3 GPUs)

The card gets up to temperature though, the fan is active too. Not sure what to think of this, any suggestions?

My GF thinks I'm useless, if you think otherwise and can proof it to her, please do so and donate:

SETUP:

5x5830.
MSI 870A FUZION.
10 1x riser cards; 5 with autodetect shorted (A17 to A1), 5 unmodified.
3 1x PCIe interfaces.
2 16x PCIe interfaces.
Running linuxcoin 0.2.1b

Given the above, I can plug 3 cards into the 1x sockets with no problems. In fact, I don't even need to do the autodetect modification. Works both ways.

Any of the above riser cards plugged (unmodded or modded) into the 16x and they are no longer recognized. Any cards that are on the 1x socket interface can be detected.

Additionally, if I plug the GPU directly into a 16x socket it no longer boots up. Is there an issue with mixing 1x and 16x interfaces using 1x riser cards?

By the way, I've got a similar setup using a Gigabyte MOBO that works just fine (5 cards running).

Any ideas?

Glad that fixed his problem - though, why would there be a need to do this on some setups but not on others? Only reason I ask is because my 1x ribbons are working fine in my 16x slots with no shorts. Perhaps it depends on the motherboard?

I think it is mobo dependent, because on my Asus P5K I cannot get a 5870 to be recognized in a PCI-e 1x slot with a 1x-to-16x converter, shorting pins A1 and B17 or not.

Do the 1x - 16x converters actually do anything, or are only the 1x pins connected up on the 16x end? I'm also running 5870s in an Asus, but granted it's a different model & chipset.

Can the problem be the 16x side? It is not really 16x...

...will say morein a wek. I have a bag (101 pieces) full of 1x->16x on the way - REAL ones, i.e. the 16x side is a physical 16x slot, no a sawed off 1x.

Mine is has a physical 16x slot at the end, where the card fits in nicely. The 1x pins are put through to the same pins on the 16x slot side with 2 cables.
Ordered 2 in Hong Kong for the sake of it, both give the same result though, which is nothing.

theres no difference. the two are electrically identical

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

I have a 1x-16x extender cable.  When I boot ubuntu into recovery mode, and drop down to root, aticonfig --list-adapters shows all the adapters correctly.  It won't boot regularly.  I tried uninstalling the 11.6 catalyst driver, reinstalling, and redoing the initial config, but it won't boot.  Will shorting the pins help me?  I'd think that if I was having the issue requiring the pins shorting, the cards wouldn't show up in aticonfig...

I tried connecting A1 and B17 pins on a PCI-e 1x slot to use a 1x to 16x converter in it, but the PC didn't boot. This is a Gigabyte mobo, so it is clearly brand related what the A1=B17 trick does.
