Are they planning to sue everyone who puts a tip button on their websites? Or won't it affect the "paypal tip/donate buttons"? They're basically same thing...

This is lunatic! I guess that those people from the patent office will have much more work on their hands in the near future! They will probably come to hate on Bitcoin because of this!

They'll probably have to do it all over again when someone comes up with a system to store patents on a blockchain. How long before we disrupt that sector?

They won't get any of those so many people are doing them, and some of them are part of most bitcoin wallets.

Maybe they're trying to see what they can get away with. Eventually one of their crazy patents will go through and they'll make a lot of money with it.

Clearly, this makes Coinbase the enemy of all things open source.

Looks like your typical patent trolling. I would not be too alarmed. I guess this means that coinbase is a successful business: frivolous, wide ranging, vague, ridiculous patents are the hallmark of successful American Corporations.

People patent the weirdest things just to preserve their ideas and the inherit "rights" therein. Nothing unusual. Very interesting business strategy on the frontier of crypto currencies actually.

They are claiming that "Hot Wallet" is patentable?
This is one area where The Bitcoin Foundation could have been helpful. They would be able to intervene and argue against parasitic patent practices on Bitcoin/bitcoin and its community.
At this rate, one day, a patent may be granted that could potentially render your everyday bitcoin activity an improper use, and royalties should be paid (if they knew you or could find you) to Coinbase or some other corporate entity.

Okay, who's gonna be the first to patent planetary, interstellar and intergalactic cryptocurrency transactions? Once accomplish, we're tackle specie-to-specie transactions provided, of course, we get Kentucky's Kim Davis' blessin'.
