LOL. At least I got it to work. But I spent $0.48 to mine the $0.12 cents on my old PC using the CPU. I used the excuse to mine coins to get an ATI 5870 card. Card was not very expensive. I think with that video card I can earn more than the electricity used to run it. If not, at least I'll finally be able to play Battlefield 3 on my PC with the new card. : ) Trying to keep this fun...

It would be best to simply go about getting a Butterfly Labs box located here - http://www.butterflylabs.com/products/ - You may earn what you spend on the box in maybe a year or two

That's the same way I started. Currently I have 3 cards running on a dedicated rig, hashing around 640mhash/s.

I just got myself ASUS 5830 last month from eBay for $110. I'm currently mining at 334 Mh/s with it. I already mined 4 BTC in about 35 days. Another 2-3 months and it will pay for itself.
Entire system is using ~200W measured with KillAWatt, so in 35 days it used 188kWh ($17 of electricity at .09/kWh).
5830/5850 seem to be the biggest band of the $ spend on them.

Play with the parameters of "cgminer" and also try to do an "undervolt". This will reduce the Mhash/s but may enhance your Mhash/W, thus saving you money while mining. The highest Hashrates usually will cost more power/Watt. not if electricity is below $0.10

The highest Hashrates usually will cost more power/Watt. Actually, I already played with all the parameters and all the miners. I'm using Phoenix 2.0 for mining (it can also be controlled by using RPC-JSON from the website). it seems that Phoenix 2.0 is the fastest miner for this card. The card is clocked at 1020Mgh and memory is clocked at 300Mgh. Once the Miner is stopped, the system by itself is only using 92Watts, so video card itself running at 100% load using about 110W (which is not bad for 334Mh/s)

Honestly, I think that everyone who uses bitcoins should mine a little at a loss, just to understand the process. It's not like he ran it for a year at a loss. To the OP, I do want to warn you that it is unlikely that your card will pay for itself because the reward is halving at the end of November and it is likely that the difficulty will be going up greatly in the next few months due to ASICs being released. However, you will probably make enough money to keep ahead of the depreciation on your card.

I do have a pre-order in for one of those 4.5 GH/s ASIC devices. I give it a 50/50 chance it will ship for real but I've wasted more than $160 on dumber things in the past. So in the end if all goes well the ASIC device will pay off my 5870 video card ($110) and I'll end up with a decent video card to be able to play BattleField 3. @Metta28 - Between 300 and 600 KH/s. Yes "K"H/s. Just doing it to learn the various aspects of BTC. @GernMiester - When I mine a more substantial amount of coins I may donate some to you so you can buy yourself some sense of humor. @bitcoinspace - I'm taking a change on one of their vaporware ASIC device...

Yeah, I'm still considering one of the new ASICS... but then I imagine how over 9000 bitcoingeeks would be in front of me mining away Its still neat to have a "bank account" that gets deposits every day from "interest" in Bitcoins. J
