Suggestions on Power Supply?

Most of the threads that address the question that I've found on the subject are quite old. 

So, cutting to the chase, what would be the cheapest solution for a power supply for 4 x 5830s?  (I'm willing to buy used, if someone is selling)

do you care about noise? the power supply you choose can make a HUGE difference in how loud the computer is.

i had a 850w thermaltake smartpower unit that was great and put out what i needed for 2x 7950's and an i5, but good lawd it was loud....

I replaced it with a corsair ax850 which is nearly silent with the same load.

that said.. an ax850, xfx 850w (80+ gold) or a seasonic 850w (80+ gold) power supply will do great. Those are all made by seasonic anyway which is an extremely high quality oem.

I ran 2 6970's @ 640 watts,now its running 1 7970 @ 365 watts,on my full gamer/miner rig.I can go to Xfire or SLI later again with no worries.

The aircraft style cables are sweet & the warranty is quick & painless,if you need it.

I had 1 800 watt die out of 6,it was my bad.I was running 720 watts off it for a miner rig,I didn't follow my own rule of thumb & keep a 200 watt buffer.

But they warrantied it & upgraded my 800 watter for that 1000 watter for FREE  

My not do that everytime,but I had trouble with thier warranty page & waited & waited for 2 weeks for "confirmation" to ship mine to them.Finally I called & raised a little cain,they sent me a free ship sticker via UPS & in 8 days they sent the replacement,the NEW 1000 watter

Nope don't care about noise.  This rig is going to be isolated from the rest of the house.  I'll look at your suggestions.  My biggest concern right now is trying to keep the price as low as possible so I'm willing to sacrifice on frills such as noise level.

The 850 watt version should work but would be at 80% efficiency, rather than it's 90% peak.

Budget brands will probably be dead within a year 
also sometimes PSU looks cheap but they make you buy the cables for more so it isn't.

Wth? And double your costs? You don't need to buy a >1kw PSU just to run it at 50% load to maintain optimal efficiency. Those max efficiency numbers are typically good for 40% all the way to 90%, IIRC. It only really starts to drop off at 90-100% load, I believe.

My general rule of thumb for running a PSU constantly is you take the max efficiency, and that's your % of it's max load for how high you can run the PSU for 24/7 usage. A standard 80Plus that's only 80% efficient? I'd only trust it to run it at 80% of it's max load for continuous operations. An 80Plus Platium that's 92% efficient? Lets run it at 92% of max load!

So take your 520W number for the cards, and add 100W for the system.  Lets say you get a 80Plus Bronze PSU (85% efficient). 620W/0.85 = 730W. The optimum efficiency is usually found in the middle of the power range that's why you double your requirement.

near 50% load you should get their 90% efficenent quote
near the bottom or top of the range you will get their 80% certified efficency rating.

$199 v $239 the price difference is $40, is it worth it for 10% more efficiency, depends on your power bills

You get a 7 years warranty with these Corsair PSUs I believe.

It powered a watercooled quad 7970 system with a 3770k and lots of fans, it has been mining for 6 months non-stop and has never given me an issue. Even though the breaker in my room has gone out countless times.

You are right, seems the 80 plus certification added more levels, these are now gold rated (mine wasn't) so minimum 87% efficient at 100% load, but im still right most efficient in the middle of the range at 90%. Ok is $40 worth it for an extra 3% efficiency? Probably not.

I have 5 or 6 rigs with this PSU.  Running 4 5830/50/70s
I've had to purchase SATA to PCIe adapters from Meritline to be able to run each pcie port off it's own cable.  I don't like running multiple pcie ports off the same cable.

Rosewill's (newegg.com store brand) CAPSTONE, FORTESS, and LIGHTNING lines using AMAZING OEM's (Superflower comes to mind). Their quality is top notch and is often much less expensive than other major brands such as Corsair and Enermax. Also they are all single 12v rail, which is the best for GPU mining (No more locked out power or delicate load balancing. Just plug in and go). If you look up reviews for these power supplies, you will find nothing other than OUTSTANDING reviews. I suggest looking them up.

I have a Rosewill Lighting powering TEN gpu's total (5 x 5970) and it doesn't even break a sweat. The exhaust air that comes out is barely warm too, which means there is a significantly smaller amount of electricity being wasted to AC-to-DC inefficiency. Gotta love 80PLUS GOLD and 80PLUS PLATINUM ratings. I also have 2 CAPSTONE 450W's powering 2 spare PCs, all of which are mining. All my Rosewills are also SILENT, even the 1300W, or I imagine it is, since I can't hear it above the fans of the radeon 5970's.

FWIW, I am powering 2 Radeon 5870 @ 1.03v from a 450W CAPSTONE and my kill-a-watt shows 315 watts at the wall.

At that price, yeah no.  NCIX frequently has the Antec TPQ-1200 OC on sale for under $110.  I'd take that over your Sirfa PSU any day of the week.
