Some times by mistake my pc gets shut down by a family member without the Bitcoin Core client gets closed first. Once I open the client, it forces me to re-build/download the entire blockchain while the entire blockchain is already in its place. What can I do to prevent it from re-building which costs nearly a full day?

R.I.P , I had this problem aswell and I was left by two choices , suicide or change the wallet . I prefered to change the wallet of course. Check my old thread here and see the answers that people gave me : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1129075.0 I personally recommend you switching to a SPV wallet like Multibit HD or Electrum since it dosen't require downloading or reindexing with the blockchain and you won't hurt your PC that way like I did .

I really like Bitcoin Core as it allows me to run a full node, for me this is the most important thing of the wallet. Some one in a chat recommended me to make a backup of the entire blockchain into an external hdd, and just copy and paste it when stuff like this happens, this way I can do it within 20 minutes instead of a full day.

Always close core first before you shut down the machine. Let the little window say "do not shut down until this is gone" finish before you shut down. If you do not follow the advice the programm gives you its database might corrupt and will need to rebuild. On a slow machine it can take several days, but it will not download the blockchain again. It uses the local data.

I have the same problem as you a couple of times. What I do now is that I always copy my "blocks" and "chainstate" folders to my external HDD every week. So in the worse case scenario, I could copy the files back from the external HDD and re-download 7 days of blocks. It does not solve the problem but at least ease the pain.

It uses the local data. I understand that I have to wait till the little window has gone before shutting down my computer. It's a family member of mine who is shutting down the computer without closing running applications first. I explained her everything and hope it will now not happen again. I always thought it was downloading the complete blockchain, thanks for pointing out it uses local data. I have the same problem as you a couple of times. Yeah, some one adviced me to do the same. It saves you a lot time and frustrations. And beside that, you always have a copy of the full blockchain with you.

Happened to me yesterday Reindexing for the last 12 or so hours, got 1 year & 36 hours worth of blocks to go. Nightmare. Your machine crashed IIRC from your other thread. The alternative to a database rebuild is that you are stuck with a corrupted database, which renders bitcoin core useless as a wallet.

Or just download the wallet as a torrent, save it to a HDD then specify core by telling it the -datadir=....

So I should STFU moaning & let it do its thang lol No, if its not acceptable to you, you should draw the consequences and migrate to a different wallet. IIRC knightdk wrote something about the database being exchanged for something else though, so maybe you can sit thight for a few versions and there will be fix. I only ever had the problem once due to a power outage and yes its annoying when it happens, but its not a constant issue. Or just download the wallet as a torrent, save it to a HDD then specify core by telling it the -datadir=....
This is not about the initial sync, which is slower with the torrent anyway. Its about unclean shutdown of core that causes the database to corrupt.

Just over 1 year of block reindexing to go.
Puts me at ease that 2 or 3 respectable members of the community have explained I'll be ok.
