Does the bitcoin software record your ip? If so is there any other way to use it besides having to download something?

Not by itself (it doesn't report your IP or any other information to any central server), but like anything that connects to other computers over the Internet, other people you connect to may record your IP. The standard client (Bitcoin-Qt) allows you to connect through Tor if you're worried about that.

I always thought the bitcoin software exchanged IP's of other nodes in order to help them find other nodes to connect to.  If you're trying to keep your IP private, Bitcoin will not do that for you.  Use Tor.

Companies claiming they got hacked and lost your coins sounds like fraud so perfect it could be called fashionable.  I never believe them.  If I ever experience the misfortune of a real intrusion, I declare I have been honest about the way I have managed the keys in Casascius Coins.  I maintain no ability to recover or reproduce the keys, not even under limitless duress or total intrusion.  Remember that trusting strangers with your coins without any recourse is, as a matter of principle, not a best practice.  Don't keep coins online. Use paper or hardware wallets instead.

Does the bitcoin software record your ip?

The bitcoin blockchain doesn't record any IP address information but the nodes that your client is connected to might.

Blockchain.info, for instance, captures this information and publishes it when they present the blockchain information (see the "first relayed by" node IP address data for each transaction).

If you send coins it'll show your IP on blockchain.info on that transaction.

If you install TOR, then on the Options|Networking tab, it allows you to enable SOCKs. The default setting (127.0.0.1 on port 9050) also happen to be the default setting for TOR, so just checking this will masquerade your identity.
