According to https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

both are  vaguele equal in performance (ignoring the low numbers) but the 5970 costs al ot less AND - more important in a setup with many of them - uses less electricity = less heat.

Correct? Any particular reason - except possible resell value - to buy 6990s?

No, no reason other than resale value to buy 6990. Well 1 reason, if you want to game on it as well as mine. But for dedicated mining the 5970 is by far the superior buy (if you can find it).
