So some scumbag out there in cyberland is picking on my 83yr old Grandma
She has a virus and cant get on the internet and called me in a panic a few days ago.
After hours of trying to help grandma fix her comp over the phone (we dont live that close to each other)....i paid her a visit in person.

Im really hoping this forum can help me with this problem as i think i might be in over my head and stretching my personal computer skills to the MAX.

Here is what i know:
*Comp is running Win7 HP
*Grandma's comp has a virus called: Trojan:Win32/Cuffahlt.B
*She has an old/outdated version of McAfee AV software that can not be ran (zero functionality)
*Microsoft Security Essentials is the only thing that can scan
*This virus has restricted the comp to having NO internet access:
trying to bring up google or yahoo.com leads to page error message saying: page can not be displayed
*After Quarantine and removal of the virus thru Microsoft Security Essentials, comp reboots and the virus has installed:
 Trojan:Win32/Patched.AO
*I attempted to install both AVG and Malwarebytes and get the same error window Runtime Error (at 92:137) Could not proc
.

I then tried installing Malwarebytes Chameleon and got the same error.
Im not sure what the next step is...anyone have any ideas?

Wipe the OS clean and re-install. You'd need the Win 7 Dvd for that but that's the best way to clean up nasty viruses that just won't leave.

Im hoping that is the last resort, since she cant find her original box where the CD would have been....

Ive been reading of possibly trying to delete the virus manually but i dont want to accidentally make the situation worse.

IMHO reinstalling is your best option.
and make a full-system-backup afterwards. this is possible with microsofts integrated backup. they allow to reset the system to this state if something bad happens again

Are you able to burn this iso on a cd?
http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/latest/bitdefender-rescue-cd.iso
If you can, it will help you clean that virus
It's a linux distro very easy to use, just put the cd, tell it to start, then follow instructions and scan, and when found viruses, destroy them.
If you are unsure, do a small backup of the important files.(I always do that when I'm uncertain of the virus in action)

I would offer the Kaspersky Rescue Disk instead

http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

I trust Kaspersky more than any other companies always made my computer really secure. After clean up install Kaspersky Total Security it will slow down your computer a little but it will make it secure.

check msconfig for services and see if anything is disabled

you can also try to find the virus through there

boot through safe mode as well when you start the computer

Keep monitoring her computer even if it has been wiped clean. Some of the more clever virus developers will hide malware loaders in external devices and the BIOS.
