Sent .75 BTC to a friend.

Goes unconfirmed for over an hour now.

I look at the transaction on the blockchain.

Says I sent 0.99999772 BTC in total.

0.24999772 BTC went to some random address that I don't know of.

the actual amount I sent 0.75 BTC went to the correct address.

But the transaction is unconfirmed. My bitcoin core client froze for a second after I hit the send button.

Here is the transaction ID - https://blockchain.info/tx/63a3c27e00772dfa54c0fb4d2e1917c7bbf1866493790939dabb26cf5ae6d32e

WTF is this shit? Did I just get robbed or what? Shocked

No you are not robbed. You have paid a very little tx fee. Just 0.00000228 according to the blockchain.info. It say that there is a medium priority for your transaction to be included in the block, just because you have pa9d such a low fee.

You will have to be patient and wait. Your transaction will eventually get confirmed. From now on, always include 0.0001 BTC tx fee. That's like 2 cents. That's nothing.

Yes, as said above, the fee was too little.
In addition, what wallet are you using? Your 0.25 remaining btc is most likely in a "change address", that you control.
Some wallets move your coins to a new address after a portion of it is sent somewhere else.

I support a decentralized & unregulatable ledger first, with safe scaling over time.

well that's weird. I use bitcoin core client. I didn't change the tx fee, it is the same as I have always used which is whatever the default is.

why would it change the tx fee? I didn't touch shit.

Thats your change. You used a 1 BTC bill to pay 0.75 BTC to your friend and 228 Satoshi to the miners. Your change is thus 1-0.75-0.00000228 = 0.24999772 BTC

You can see the address is part of your wallet if you enable coin control (Settings -> Options -> Wallet) and go to Send -> Inputs -> List mode

Im not really here, its just your imagination.

well, the default fee per kb on qt are 0.00001BTC/kb which is 0.00009BTC lower than the recommended fee per kb. you should change it.

Weird, I never knew about this.

Thanks for explaining it to me.

But why would the TX fee have changed?

I've never touched it? I've done hundreds of transactions without anything like this ever happening.......

I am no expert, nor have used Bitcoin Core. But to attempt to answer your question:
But it is possible that a change was made to the tx fee part of the protocol between two different versions of Bitcoin Core.
Have you downloaded a new version?

I assume you use the slider (from normal - 15 blocks to fast - next block) to adjust the fee. It estimates the fee based on other unconfirmed transactions in the network and those that made it in the last blocks. If there are many unconfirmed transactions it increases the fee to meet the matched block as good as possible without overpaying. As you can see from the picture below the number of unconfirmed TX in the last few hours was higher than usual. Thus core has increased your fee. This happens from time to time and can have different reasons. Sometimes its just more people using bitcoin, sometimes its a full blown spam attack with ~100k transactions. The spam mostly pays a low fee though, so you will hardly notice it with core.

Along with this, if you start up BItcoin core to just send a transaction as soon as it is ready, there won't have been enough time for it to gather enough data about the number of unconfirmed TXes so it will estimate the wrong fee. If you are just starting up Bitcoin Core to send a transaction, then set a fee manually because the estimate will be too low.

This is way too much. 0.0001 will do in most of the cases, 0.0002 when there are maybe some stress tests, etc. I am sending always like this and not once did I have any problems.
