Whats the best "deal" on a PSU for a single S3? Just looking for a cheap PSU that'll be able to sustain a single S3 for awhile while I make a hobby out of BTC mining with free electricity.

I don't mean to kill a sell i know you not worry why not this ? This one is truly plug and play . better then a ATX but the same and the break out board is awesome. http://holybitcoin.com/product/hp-1200-watt-common-slot-psu-bundle/it's super easy to plug in, all hell need is a plug for were he lives at, it's instant a 900 watts on a 120 line and a instant 1200 on a 220 there is no noise hocked up to 2 S3 if it s on a 220 line , two S5 it can get rather annoying with noise .

I have one (last) Corsair CX500M PSU for sale. It is like new (used for a month or two). It is a cheap, but sufficient miner and could run S3 just fine. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1184814.0If interested and have BTC, PM me.

Remember when factoring price for Server PSU's (like holybitcoin.com's offering which is fantastic) if you get a PSU failure, unlike ATX PSU's where a whole new PSU must be purchased, the board & cables are re-useable and only the inexpensive server PSU needs to be replaced. All PSU brands will have failures, especially in demanding environments like mining.

Seriously folks...
This an S3.
Find ANY 430w or 460w or whatever the cheapest Cooler Master, Antec, or whatever other $5 power supply that Goodwill has lying around or you can scrap out of some old PC.
Try the goodwill outlet for the $0.89/lb stuff.
You'll want one with at least two 15A 12v rails, or a single 12v rail of 30A or higher, try to find one with 2 PCI-E 6-pin connectors already attached, otherwise you may need to use the motherboard pins in creative fashion or get a HDD style molex to PCI-E adapter (these are usually 2 into 1), but will often cost you as much as a power supply, even though they shipped free with video cards for a couple years there and are plentiful in surplus locations and labs everywhere.
Think CHEAP! This is an S3, right now, if your power is under $0.10 USD/kw, and you get a cheap enough supply, depending on what you paid for the unit, you might make some coin!
Good luck!

Do the math on S3 you will lose money if at 10 cents you really need cheaper. There are those who run gear and justify loss as heaters. But I would rater run a machine I don't lose and spend more and still get that free heat. But on cheap PSU... bad advice. Some are crazy bad on PCIe cables. Everything from just cheap cables to horrible adapters. Fire scares me... so I use proper PSU's. Dont think cheap think safe. A good PSU you can use multiple generations of miners.

I used to base a ton of PSU purchases off this list that is pretty old, but still good https://community.newegg.com/eggxpert/computer_hardware/f/135081/t/45344.aspxSo far EVGA and Corsair have been very solid PSUs for my uses, as well as when I had been mining.

OP mentions that he has free electricity so it should be pretty easy for him to mine enough to cover the cost of the PSU and the S3. Cheap is great if you're looking for faster ROI but in my mind I'd like something reliable that I could upgrade with. Like if you went with the bare minimum to run the S3 with, if you ever decide to upgrade the S3 to say an S5, you'd have to buy another PSU either one powerful enough to run the S5 or use two PSUs to run a single S5. I guess it depends on how much you plan to grow your farm or not. I might be interested in a PSU philipma1957 if the OP's not interested.

I have burnt one PSU cord and ever since have paid for quality PSU's. It's a little scary seeing the after math I got lucky and just the cheap adapter the PSU came with burnt. But It made me think... do I want to sleep with that worry? I don't. So get quality PSU's. A new trend is server PSU's only thing is a lot of them tend to be loud.

It seems decent for ATX PSU's. Wish they were a little bigger then 850's. I like having fewer PSU's. Ever since I figured out how well some server PSU's work I have not paid near as much attention to ATX psu's. Server PSU's are just hard to beat on price and depending on which one you get they can have impressive power ratings if they were to to rated.
