I actually don't like Avast so much. Also, I prefer firewall and av 2 in 1.
The rule is simple: have a decent firewall, a decent antivirus (with components for detecting malware and keyloggers too), browser plugins like WOT, don't visit all shitty websites, don't click on all mails and attachments, don't install all the crap you don't need. If you want to "test out" things, or run keygens, just use virtual machine.
And btw, switching to Linux sounds lately better and better to me as an option.
