Hello, just purchased two of the Delta AFC1212DE 120mm x 38mm for an S5. They are in a push / pull configuration. Upon starting the machine they go to full speed / RPM and stay there. It does not matter what setting is made in the configuration settings for fan speed percentage. For example, the fans run at full RPM at 1% or 99% fan speed percentage. One fan is running at ~3700 rpm and then other is at ~4000 rpm. The fans do not seem to be responding to the software...... Any ideas? Cheers!

Standard 4-wire pinout (power, ground, tach, pwm in that order)?

Cool, quiet and up to 1TH pod miner, on sale now!

Thanks for your reply......

It has four wires / four pins. It has a 5-pin connector but the last connector is empty so it's really just four pins.

Trying the tach and pwm pins in reverse has not been successful. The fan ran at full speed but this time showed 0 rpm in the configuration panel.

It's plugged in with (black / red / white / blue / empty) which converts to (ground / power / sense / speed / empty). Do you suppose that ground and power could be reversed?

Cheers!

Were that the case, it would not spin. It'd be pretty weird if that model fan didn't use the same PWM standard for speed control as every other 4-wire fan, but that could be the case.

Pull the blue PWM wire from the connector and connect it to ground. What happens to the fan speed? Connect it to 12V. Again, what happens to speed?

Look at your kernel log, may have to reboot the miner to see it. If you see something like this

[   42.665651]  error_fan 4, normal_fan 0, fan_num 2

Something wrong with the fan. I had the same issue with my S7. The fan spins but doesn't show up on miner status page.

My working S7 doesn't show any errors.

What do you mean by connecting the blue PWM to ground? You mean touch the blue to the ground wire? And same with connecting blue to the 12V wire?

Will check the kernel log in a bit.

The fan spins but it also shows up on the miner status page. The RPM on the status page is 3,800, regardless of value of "Customize the fan speed percentage".

The 5 pin connector appears to be Dell-specific and might not be wired to work on a standard 4-pin header.

Check the pinout on the connector.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

That fan has only 4 wires. I think pwm-signal is not suitable for it. Data-sheet says pwm has to be cmos comtatible and frequency range from 30Hz to 300kHz. And what I know about S3, it outputs only 19Hz when speed is about 2400rpm. S5 is propably in the same ballpark. If duty-cycle is considered as 100% by fan,it runs at full speed.

Does "cmos compatible" mean it's expecting an actual pulsetrain? Standard 4-wire PWM is an open-collector (or open-drain, as the case may be) output, I believe operating at 24KHz +/- 4KHz. The fan should have an internal pull-up which ensures it runs at full speed in the absence of a signal. If that fan is expecting a logic-level pulsetrain then... well, you could tie a 1K resistor between the PWM line and the 3.3V source on the control board and it might work.

Wow very detailed info so far..... Smiley

The 5 pin connector appears to be Dell-specific and might not be wired to work on a standard 4-pin header.

Check the pinout on the connector.
The wires were in the connector in the wrong order. In order to work they had to be reordered to match the Antminer's header.

By the way here is the kernel log after a reboot. There are two fans: Fan0 is the original Antminer fan in push; Fan1 is the Dell fan in pull.

OK, I could have been more detailed (except I couldn't see YOUR connector to see the pinout it was using), but I still claim the win.

Are you assuming the fan not running is the issue?

The fan running is not the issue. The fan running without PWM is the issue......

Yes this one has the same connector and the wires were in the same order initially... http://www.amazon.com/Electronics-AFB1212SHE-Dell-148-34-Connector/dp/B00H59O046/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1446399253&sr=8-4&keywords=Delta+AFC1212DE+120mm+x+38mm

In order to get the fan to run (cannot figure out PWM yet) and Antminer to report the RPM in miner settings, the wires had to be reordered like this: https://i.imgur.com/kYDI4eK.jpg

Edit: Add report the RPM.....

I made the assumption that you changed the wires to fix the PWM issue, since you never posted anything about the fans not running at all.

That is correct. Wires are now in the correct order for the fan to run. Issue is that now the PWM is not working......
