I have a friend of mine who protected his wallet with a password but he forgot it.
Is there any way it could be recovered ?
He does have 5 BTC in it, for some it may not be much but he mined them for more than a year
Could anyone help ? I will pay anyone that can help me 0.5 BTC bounty

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Multibit Classic or HD? How much does your friend remember about the password?

Classic Multibit
He does not remember much but I'm pretty sure his password is not very complicated and is not very long.
might be a max 10 characters

Assuming alphanumerical symbols 10 characters is enough to make it impossible to brute force.

10(2*26+10) combinations by 1.3M attempts per second would take ~8*1050 years.

Take a look here -> https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/TUTORIAL.md#btcrecover-tutorial

Esp. the part about the token file and typos.

Here is how you locate the important files -> https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/TUTORIAL.md#finding-multibit-classic-wallet-files

Do you think you can build a token file with your friend and find the needed private key backup file?

If you can narrow it down to a few billion passwords I think I can help you. Just did a test and the script linked above does ~360-400k passwords per second on my machine.

There are services that retrieve password out of the wallet, but they charge 20% of the total wallet:

(I was about to put Daves's website for wallet recovery services but I'm not sure if that is allowed)

But I think I can put a link to his thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=240779.0

And of course, mine: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1234619.0

I wish your friend can get his coins back; good luck.

I can help you to restore/recover your wallet or password.

I have not heard of any problems with Dave's wallet recovery service so I think it is fine to post it directly:

He responded me, I gave him the wallet like he suggested ( we agreed on he would take 20 % of the wallet, meaning 1 BTC)
Later I checked the wallet and seems like the 5 BTC are gone : https://blockchain.info/ro/address/1PGjyi4YfzPrQvkPLjpq3NG4rk3g917uTn

Looks like he is not an honest guy after all, he stole the BTC

Later edit: he replied my e-mail saying he decripted the wallet and asked for an adresss where to send the 4 BTC

Later later edit : I am now waiting for the 4 BTC promised (let's see if he will send them to me)

Later later later edit: I can see the tranzaction on the blockchain.info,  but it shows as unconfirmed and I can't see it into my wallet at all:

https://blockchain.info/ro/tx/c075cd8c8bb7aa00f32ed18ac8c98506c2ada30f4bc9d8447c9477d36aae638e

Can you guys tell if this is a legit tranzaction or not ?

Indeed he is !
I was a bit scared that he would have stole all BTC ( he could have done that for sure) but he was honest and only kept his 20% share, as we agreed on
