(CNSNews.com) - In the Detroit public school district, 96 percent of eighth graders are not proficient in mathematics and 93 percent are not proficient in reading.

That is according to the results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress tests published by the Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics.

Only 4 percent of Detroit public school eighth graders are proficient or better in math and only 7 percent in reading. This is despite the fact that in the 2011-2012 school year—the latest for which the Department of Education has reported the financial data—the Detroit public schools had “total expenditures” of $18,361 per student and “current expenditures” of $13,330 per student

Be radical, have principles, be absolute, be that which the bourgeoisie calls an extremist: give yourself without counting or calculating, don't accept what they call ‘the reality of life' and act in such a way that you won't be accepted by that kind of ‘life', never abandon the principle of struggle.

Not much better in Chicago.

The CPS (Chicago Public Schools) were hopping up and down for joy last year when they topped a 66% graduation rate.  That's a record!  Woo Hoo!

Well over a third still not finishing high school.  and that's a good thing.

good grief.

Originally they claimed it was higher @ ~69%, but had to retract it, after an audit found 'errors' in the data submitted by CPS.  Apparently dropouts were being miscategorized as 'transfers' or stuck in other categories, such as 'left to go into homeschooling'.  Oopsie.

not that the CPS or the city, or the mayor, who was touting these numbers during re-election, would have any vested interest is all of this rampant mislabeling.  oh, nooooooo.

wrt to the thread subject matter, we're cranking out millions of morons a year here in the US, no doubt about that.  the systems in place are corrupt as hell and nobody gives a shit about anything but their own interests in these systems that are supposed to look out for these kids, no doubt about that either.  Anywhere there is big money there is corruption.  There is big money in big city education, so the crooks are all over the place here also.....

Inner city public schools for the win! Time to spend even more money and that will solve the problem for sure. Seriously tho, if parents aren't willing to watch over their kids doing their homework and make sure they know the material, there's not much you can expect from the teacher - who can't work miracles. Furthermore, this new common core way of doing things is only gonna make things worse. Time to burn the dept of ed to the ground and leave all the money and curricula to the localities so that they can better fit the needs of the students. One size fits all has been an abysmal failure.

I know this is a good excuse to blame african americans. Any family that grows up with jobless, drug addicted parents will have fucked up kids irregardless of their race.

yep, without parental support and commitment to their children's education the system is nothing more than a child care service.

That is pretty sad considering that American schools keep lowering the standards to pass stupid kids.

thats because if you lower the standard for kids to pass, you allow more kids to pass, resulting in better statistics for those schools, which translates into more funding. its a vicious cycle of negligence honestly, and nothing is done about it despite the fact that the people of america (a good portion of the population at least) are becoming noticeably stupid with every passing day.

I know this is a good excuse to blame african americans. Any family that grows up with jobless, drug addicted parents will have fucked up kids irregardless of their race.
that's a pretty negative stereotype;  id think its not the parents fault that kids are unwilling to get an education, in many cases the parents do all they can to push their children to receive an education, even in 'the hood.'

the teachers are also a huge part of the problem; there was a documentary i watched a while back on the education system in harlem, and the biggest contributors were the teachers themselves who honestly didnt give two shits about the students as they were on tenure.

theres nothing here. message me if you want to put something here.

Have you ever heard of a country called Moldova? The annual income there is around one-twentieth of that in Detroit. But the parents there take good care of their children. I know a number of people from that country, who went on to become quite successful in their life. It has more to do with the attitude. And producing children at the age of 15 and 16, out of wedlock is not going to help.
