European leaders are at odds with Athens over protection for families at risk of losing their homes because of mortgage defaults

European leaders have told Greece that it must do more to prove it is pushing through the reforms its creditors have demanded before it can receive a €2bn (£1.4bn) aid payment.

The debt-stricken country has been at odds with its lenders over the protection it can offer families at risk of being made homeless because of mortgage defaults.

Greece clinched an €86bn bailout in the summer, in return for promising measures to reduce its deficit such as higher VAT rates and pension cuts. Its lenders have also demanded new laws to help banks repossess homes from people who cannot meet their loan repayments.

The new sticking point turned the buildup to a key Brussels meeting of eurozone finance ministers on Monday night into a series of tit-for-tat briefings reminiscent of the height of the bailout crisis earlier this year.

Greece’s EU peers continued to lament the pace of economic reform in Athens, while the country’s leftwing government under the prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, has stood by demands for social safeguards for its citizens. On the contentious repossession rules, it wants more first homes to be exempt.

At stake is the release of Greece’s next tranche of aid from its third bailout. Athens spent the weekend trying to persuade its creditors that it had met the terms agreed this summer to qualify for the much-needed cash. Ahead of the Eurogroup meeting, however, it appeared they were not convinced.

The monetarain union worked good, in fact so good they got new countries etc. etc.

Then the euro came and having 1 balance seem to be riskfull when the 'poor' southern european countries seems to have a lot of gaps in the balance. And so the rich countries have to pay.

It would be better to cancel the participation of countries, like who can't cope up. This way everybody benefits in the long term.

Since Greece was bailed out again, my hope for that plan is delayed, but eventually Germany and France will see they can't grow their economies and sustain the economies with corruption too.

I think the biggest problem of greece is 30% of population that live with taxes. This is awfull!

Second, i think Euro is one of the most awfull currencies ever created, 1 con for 19 kind of different economies! Impossible!

I live in Italy, and i can cleary say that euro and stupid european rules are destroying our works, our skills. our story, our generational know how.

Euro is gonna fail in my hopinion, maybe can be the biggest change for BTC to land on the wide usage.

(MAYBE)
I don't think adopting BTC will change their fate and will be the same as adopting the EURO, which is just benefiting the rich countries. With the single currency, the country is lacking the capacity of adjusting the economy and cannot be flexible to balance their trade or industry production.  They have to follow the rich country and end up becoming more poor.

Earlier they used to work in the farms. After they received the European Union membership, they stopped doing so. Now it is the Afghan and Somali immigrants, who are toiling in the Greek farms. Go to any Greek village, and you will hardly find a single Greek youngster. The younger Greeks have all migrated to the major cities, or to other nations such as Germany and Australia.

Hi

There are a lot of issues in Greece, specifically the issue of corruption and the shadow economy. Some people are saying that they should go back to the drachma, but this is questionable.

They are in a really difficult situation and it will take a lot of time to resolve this

They get it yet again and they riot in the streets cause they don't get what they want, like spoiled brats.
Use what you got and figure it out, that is what adults do when they have a problem, just like everyone else in this world.

It is the same story. The Government of Tsipras will continue with its demagogy. Tsipras is convinced that have persuasive superpowers and that can hypnotize everyone. So he is convinced that without doing what must be made in order to have the promised money, the European leaders, at the moment that will see him will remain fascinated by his face, will open all the vaults full of money and will invite him to chose the kind of money he will want and the amount wanted (again by him).

Then Tsipras will wake up and will remember all its story as a Leader of Government which make all the Europeans to see him and its ministers like aliens comes from another world during all the period of contacts with them. Then will remember the story of the referendum won by him and celebrate all night long from the Greeks which had as finish the sign by him himself of an agreement much more severe than it not accepted by him himself and the referendum celebrated by more than 60% of all the Greeks.

When will come back at Earth such kind of being? When will understand that the Greece is in sore straits and needed hard and again hard and continuous work to do? When will understand that is a big shame the situation in which the State and the Greek people are? When will understand that cannot be possible to live with the money of the others and being proud of this like mean all its behavior and the majority of Greeks? When will be conscious that to pay the others for the money given or are willing to give again only to help that country and that people needed to be made deep and structural reforms in all the areas of Greek economy and State? How is possible to be so dandy in its behavior when have a mountain of work, troubles and big problems to withstand?

Only him can do such things. Personally become every day more convinced that with him in power the agony of Greeks will be much more longest and harder. The others before him were liars or thieves but never so stupids like is this.

What choice do they have, when they are so heavily invested in their economy. Greece is the dying cash cow for them... It is still producing milk, but the cost to feed the cow and

the emotional implications of killing the cow, out weigh the value of the meat. The survival of the Greek economy is crucial for the political survival of many of these politicians

supporting these huge bailouts. It's all about politics and power these days... The bailouts is a great leverage for the politicians.  Roll Eyes

Germany is going to die. In a few years we will be economically as bad as Italy, Spain or Portugal.
The refugee crisis will break our neck! Only this year it will cost us around 20 billion euros!
Some economists predict that this whole desaster will cost the country up to a trillion euros the next coming years!!!
Sorry to say this but situation in the whole EU will become worse!

This is exactly what happens when the people lose the say in the future of the country. Germany has taken away Greece's sovereignty and assets. Even South American countries, when in the same position as Greece have defaulted and come back stronger. Greece needs to leave, default, devalue and build again.

and why the greece is needed for the euro? they are nothing more than an useless dead wieght at the moment, they are not contributing to anything, besides sucking money that can be used for more useful things

and i'm not really convinced about the whole theory that if greece will be abandoned other countries will follow, is yet to be seen, since this is the only argument in favor of not banning greece from the Eurozone

90% of all Greek debt is actually being held by the French and German banks. If you let Greece down the drain, you have actually just killed your own banks or your own state (France and Germany) since these states will have to bail out these banks if they go bust.

Like this, with keeping Greece in a sort of comma, you can still drain Greek people little by little and maybe, just maybe have less damage at the end.

Not to mention setting the precedent if you let Greeks down. Then same can happen to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland.
