It will be interesting to see how this impacts the economy of Spain, the Euro crisis is still a spectre over the Eurozone and Catalonian independence is one of those issues that will rattle a few sabers.

Either way its worth watching to see what will happen here that said there is still time. (It aims to pave the way for the region to declare independence as early as 2017) So there is at least one year on this one before it emerges as a major economic issue for the EU.

Hmmmm... how much difference is this going to make? First of all, it won't be that easy for Catalonia to secede from Spain. In the recent past, the Spanish authorities have crushed the separatists movements in Basque Country and Galicia, by either exterminating or incarcerating the rebel leadership. The same can happen to the Catalan separatists.

I expect the exact opposite. Catalonia will go bankrupt, while Spain will survive with EU money.

The money will stay in Spain. Caixa and Sabadell, 2 large banks are based in Cat, but they will have to move their headquarters to Madrid, otherwise, they shall loose their Spanish banking license, that is the right to do business in Spain, if they suddenly find themselves based in a foreign country. Besides no Spanish bank would be able to survive long without access to money from the ECB, which a bank in Catalonia would not be able to get.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

Catalonia will stay. People are afraid of separatist movements but they are just jumping too high recently. It will be the same as it was with Scotland.
Scots cried even more about need of independence and being oppressed by England. And in the end they voted to stay in UK.

I believe independence in this situation is better. Scots were different story.
Spain saw very different wars inside the country in near past and high tension living under a country is bad.

England was at war with the scots during centuries because of independence. I don't see how this is different.

I really don't think this is going to happen - it's in everyone's best interest to stay together, although the Catalans might get some benefits from making all this noise. It won't actually happen though.

Whatever the outcome, I support the Catalans, the people in the Basque Country, the people in Galicia, in Veneto, in Sardinia, in Scotland, in their respective bids for self-determination, as is their right. The same right that the second world war was ostensibly fought over; people have the right to determine their own political outcome, not something decided by outsiders.

When did they have a refrendum? They wanted one, but it was declared illegal. When Ausias March wrote Valencia and Catalonia did not form a part of Spain. The talk of culture is not pony. More and more, kids speak Catalan in class and Spanish outside. The sadly famous ex-minister of "Education and Culture" in Spain, Wert declared that he wanted to "Spnishfy" Catalonia. Spanish is certainly not a foreign language.

Catalonia will become independent, there is no question in my mind, the question is only when exactly will this happen? There is nothing stronger than a made up mind and Catalonia people's minds are pretty made up!

I don't know how this works, I didn't even knew what Catalonia was and had to Google it. Precisely because of this i think it would be negative for them, Spain is a much more recognized name worldwide, as opposite to Catalonia which like I said before required me to Google it (I knew Barcelona but not Catalonia).

If Catalonia wants to be independent, there should be a large majority of Catalans supporting independence but we haven't seen that so far. In the election last September, it was only 48% of the people who voted for politicians in favor of independence. Not enough, especially on such a difficult decision. Only a 60% majority would be acceptable.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

They didn't have a referendum. They had local elections that some people declared as a "de-facto referendum" - nothing official.

Boom
More noise and storm in Europe. It is serious, specially now during election time in Spain

If  Cataloniawill separate from Spain whatever way, than Spain will be bankrupt,Catalonia is richeast area in Spain

Any EU money will not be able to keep Spain away from be bankruptcy

The Catalan parliament has voted to formally begin the process of breaking away from Spain, deepening its standoff with the central government in Madrid as the region begins one of the most decisive weeks to date in its push for independence.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/09/catalonia-mps-to-vote-on-secession-plan-in-showdown-with-spains-government

I don't think that Catalonia will vote for the secession. But even will happen this fact you are in big wrong about the possible problems of Spain. It is true that Catalonia is one of the most richest area of Spain but Spain is much more bigger than Catalonia and have to many resources. You can learn everything about the Spain's economy here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain#Economy

Then if the countries of Europe has not allowed the go out of Greece from Eurozone it is out of mind to not act in the same way for Spain which is much more important and big country compared to Greece. And at the end, as I know (even I am not very informed about the situation there) the Spain is away from the situation in Greece. Have problems with the debt but that's all. Greece had and continue to have big problems not only with the debt but with the structure of the state, with the overall wealth which is not supported at all by its economy and its revenues, with various big privileges had from structures and even Greek people, with the big corruption, with the enormous tax evasion by almost all the Greek businesses etc. etc.

So have no comparison between the two situations. And this mean no problem of "Spainexit" from Eurozone.
