I saw many ppl here are using bitstamp for the exchanges. According to the payment method you are using, they could be +% on top of the rate!

The only site that I have ever seen people use is preev.com
I have used it for years and it seems to be the most reliable and equally unbiased platform.

While I use http://preev.com/ for quick reference, this site https://bitcoinwisdom.com/ has some graphs for comparison (Osgood - I need graphs, *lots* of graphs!)

Despite what most people above say, I most often see bitstamp as the price of reference in the currency exchange section. Which is strange because for the most part, bitfinex appears to usually have greater volume then bitstamp (although both volume levels are very high).

I personally like to quote coinbase exchange rate because that is what I will use to exchange into and out of fiat. (This actually may be why bitstamp is more widely quoted then bitfinex because their verification process seems to be easier then bitfinex, making it easier to get fiat into and out of bitstamp).

the rate from whichever exchange you are going to trade the bitcoin yourself makes more sense - otherwise you may end up with a loss.

if not that, I'd use the exchange with the most volume in the currency of your choice, as they are also likely to have the smallest bid-offer spread.

This! All of them mostly are recommended by users. I prefer Coinbase due to the fairly quick transfers between my bank account. But I guess that depends on the bank ..

I use coinbase too. It is the one that was more easy to setup for me for doing transfers with my banka account.

But still, shouldn't we quote the biggest Usd exchange by the volume out there, regardless of the verification process? It might be rather that people are used to quoting Bitstamp as they were the biggest before their hack!

This was always weird to me. Everyone is quoting Bitstamp but Bitfinex is bigger than them. I have Bitfinex price on my Bitcoin widget. I don't know, it just makes sense following the biggest.

I always check the price at preev (it has a weighted average of bitstamp, localbitcoins, kraken (EURO and bitfinex).

If you go here you find the biggest markets and various rates (for comparison)
