Good Morning,

I have an electric dryer line that I don't use.  It currently has a 50 Amp breaker on it.  I know I can rewire the breaker to an outlet, but should I replace the 50 amp breaker with a smaller breaker?  I have a 20 A Tripplite PDU.  Thanks in advance.

show the exact make and model of the tripplite   so I can figure out how it is fused.

Most are fused in a way that you will not have to swap out the  panel breaker.

What gauge is the wire?  A dryer pulls a continous load so the wire should handle 50A. I would get a 50A PDU and use all the capable power.

I would keep the breaker a 50A and run a bigger PDU.  Here is Finsky thread he sells 48A PDU that would do the job, just check with him on the plug types etc.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=966135.0

I think you listed a different PDU, the one I was talking about is a 48A, you listed a 20A.  But either way a fuse or breaker is a must.

I think you listed a different PDU, the one I was talking about is a 48A, you listed a 20A.  But either way a fuse or breaker is a must.

op listed the pdu and it is no good. as it is not fused and rated for 20 amps.

he has it plugged into a 50  amp ciruit breaker.  so it would be a fire hazard.

since he said he has the pdu on hand he wants to go cheap.  so swapping the ciruit breaker in the fuse box from 50 to 20 would keep the pdu safe.

What gauge is the wire?  A dryer pulls a continous load so the wire should handle 50A. I would get a 50A PDU and use all the capable power.

I'm not using the outlet where the dryer is.  I'm just using the breaker, of course I will use the recommended wire for 50 A.

you can't use that pdu ever just don't use it

it does not have a fuse

Agreed about the PDU.  If you want to use that one, then definitely swap out the breaker for a 20A.  If you want to keep the same breaker, get a better PDU.

240v line completed.  Very easy.

Good luck with it.

I gather you kept the pdu and put in a 20 amp circuit. This way the pdu will not be over loaded.

You can do three s-7's on it with no issues.

yeah 240 is good.

i have 2 30 amp circuits .  i could run ten s-7 5 on each circuit. to run ten s-7 on 120 i need ten circuits. big difference
