Dust and Miners?

I was just wondering about how detrimental dust can be to miners. I had my BFL 60 in my basement and it worked fine until it simply stopped. Fan runs makes noise but no hashes. The only thing I can see is that there is a fair amount of dust and dirt in my unfinished basement. Could this be what killed my miner? What can I do to remedy it?

Depending on the amount that was circulated through the system, it can kill any hardware.  Any computer hardware is designed to allow heat to escape from the system.  When you have a build up of dust, even of a small amount, you are making your equipment run harder for with it has to do.  If you do not catch this in time, then your system will shut down and you will burn it up.  The only way to battle against this with out the need to be there cleaning your fans out every hour, would be to move the miner to an evironment that is alot less dusty.  You do not want your hardware overworking.

Panty hose.. dollar store.. lint roller... dollar store..

Bam there you go, no problems .  Lint roll the pantyhose every day, awesome filter.

next time, look into buying a decent filter...

You can pick up an odorsock (used by canabis growers) for about $50. Stops all the dust, can be washed, and only limits the airflow by a very small amount

I just clean mine out at certain points.  I think filtering each miner is a little overkill unless you have very dusty area.   I normally just clean if I see something looking to dusty.  I like air to push it out and if too deep in then a cloth or something and air from closer up. 

But i agree a real duty spot some special requirements might need to happen.  I so far have not had any issues with dust luckily hurting miners and have been in the game a while.

Dust can be a killer for hardware, that is for sure, the smaller components used, more likely than dust will gone cause some problems.

We just go through from time to time with some canned air and spray the dust out in the direction that the fans blow.  The only miners we've lost were Prismas and a faulty S5 but none of that was dust related. 

I think you're more likely to lose hardware to heat caused by the fan stopping, not dust build up.

I test fan speeds every day as fans stopping = death.
