I just had an idea - a few years ago I was a developer on another forum and subscribers were able to chat. Chat Mod for SMF makes very easy to implement and it could be configured so only Full Member rankings and above can use it. There are times where I find myself wanting to chat with people here and all we really have are threaded discussions. Thoughts?

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Nice idea but I fear if it were implemented it would end up like all the other 'troll boxes' on the exchanges and could turn into a mess.

This was discussed here , overall the feedbacks were not in support of it. I mean if you want to chat, do so in a public IRC channel.

Why exactly would a forum need a chat box? The entire site is a chat box.

Well I have read the other thread so I figure we don't need to keep this one open. I see this proposal has been rejected so I'm locking the thread.

EDIT: Can't seem to do that in this section, Moderator, please lock. Thanks.

A chatbox would be messed up, if it was a small forum then it would make sense but Bitcointalk is a huge community. It is way too big to introduce a chatbox.

Definitely not. It would just require much more moderation and would not have any real benefits. If you want to chat, use IRC.

IRC exists and a lot of good Bitcoin-related channels exist, namely #bitcoin and #bitcoin-otc on freenode. We don't need a chatbox as it will simply dissolve into a lot of shouting and arguing and turn into a trollbox while we have to recruit even more moderators to try to clean up the mess that will be left over. It just isn't compatible with a forum that is supposed to provide one of the main sources of discourse in the Bitcoin community.
