I think that happens to a lot of people.

How does voluntaryism differ from anarcho-capitalism?

I think there are voluntaryists from the left who seek voluntary communism, under which the feeling of ownership that you have regarding something you possess could get you into trouble when you exercise your right to "self"-defense.  I sometimes argue with them that to be practical, they ought to respect others' claims to property (respect capitalism), even if they don't want anyone to respect their own ownership of stuff.

They are basically synonymous although Voluntaryism emphasizes mutually voluntary relationships. "Voluntaryist" also sounds better when introducing it to new people whereas anything with "anarchy" in it will tend to work against you. For a personal philosophy I prefer "Autarchy/Autarchism" because it takes Voluntaryism to the next level of individual development - it focuses on "self-rule" and "self-mastery. In my opinion, here's the scale of "freedom philosophies" in order of their development:

1. Autarchism (self-rule/self-mastery)
2. Voluntaryism (peaceful relationships)
3. Anarcho-capitalism (which is really just unadulterated Capitalism)
4. Anarchy (without ruler)
