On thursday last week I withdrew Bitcoins I had bought from Mt Gox. I copypasted my receiving address, so it has to be right, but it hasn't shown up in my Bitcoin client. Is it supposed to take this long? Or, given that I'm new to Bitcoin, is there something else that I might have done wrong? My funds are no longer on my Mt Gox account, so they obviously have been sent from there. Many thanks in advance for any reply!

Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

It should be instantaneous.
Maybe your client does not have an up to date blockchain and thus doesn't know about the transaction. (how many blocks is it reporting in the status bar ?)
Feed your address to BlockExplorer and see if the transaction has registered.

Yes, according to BlockExplorer the transaction has taken place. But still, nothing in my client.

That's because at 72623 blocks your client doesn't have an up to date blockchain history.  As I type this the network is at 129060 blocks, so you've still got a ways to go before your client will be up to date.  Once your client downloads the block containing the transaction from mtgox to you, then it'll show up in your client.  As long as it shows up in block explorer, you're good.

Bitcoin Fact: the price of bitcoin will not be greater than $70k for more than 25 consecutive days at any point in the rest of recorded human history.

Okay, that's nice to hear! I'll just wait then (it's at 73022 blocks at the moment). Thanks everyone for all the help! Smiley

When I first used bit-faucet it too far longer than I expected. So I wouldn't panic yet.

As soon as my client downloaded the block containing the transaction, the bitcoins showed up in my client. Turns out I didn't really know how this technology works. Oh well.

We get that case a lot in the mails we are handling, I'd guess this is mostly due to the fact the current method to find the initial peers (via irc) is not adapted to the growth of the network.

I'm waiting from yesterday and still I'm not able to visualize my balance in the client... I don't get how does it work... I kept it open for almost last 12 hours...
If i look for the transaction i see it ... look in the screenshot... I din't get how this block thing works Sad

why does it says Not connected ? what is 0 connection?
# of blocks is 116911 , 0 transaction ...

I'm behind a NAT ( university ) ... Is this the problem?
