How to Set up GPU mining

I am looking to buy a video card for small GPU mining.  Could someone explain how I can set it up to mine once I get and install the video card.  Also can I put in more than one video card into my computer and run them both for mining?  Sorry so many questions, just could not find the answers in the forums.

It is better to read some tutorials before starting mining. http://cryptomining-blog.com/ could be a good source. But just read that after you are little familiar with mining first.

It is pretty simple to set up GPU mining. However, currently GPU and CPU mining aren't profitable anymore...

DDR3 is not a problem for mining. You can mine Ethereum coin now if your electricity price is not too high. You need at least 4GB memory and 64bit operating system.

You do NOT need a 64 bit OS to mine altcoins - I mined with GPUs on 32 bit Slackware for about a year, NO ISSUES.

 Amount of memory needed might vary with the coin - I was mining Scrypt-based coins on systems with 1 Gig DDR.

 It's the memory on the VIDEO CARD / GPU that really matters for mining, unless you're CPU mining something.
 Don't worry about what your motherboard memory type is.

 I'd recommend any Maxwell-based Nvidia card, or possibly some of the recent AMD cards, if you want to have a chance of mining altcoins profitably.

 Profitability is a function of several factors, the biggest SINGLE factor is cost of electricity. I can specify (having run the numbers recently) that X11 based coins like DASH can be mined with a good 3-GPU rig using Nvidia 960/970/980 Maxwell-based cards and low power draw on the motherboard/CPU, but it's not going to make a lot or achieve ROI very soon (and you need the cards to last YEARS to do so, pushing the overclock on them reduces your chance of ROI. Best to undervolt as far as you can and then underclock enough to achieve reliable mining performance with maximal efficiency).

If you want to mine Ethereum with Windows, you need 4 GB memory and 64 bit operating system. It is quite profitable.

It may now, but one of Ethereum's defenses against asics was the increasing size of the DAG file. I believe this all has to fit within the GPU's memory, and keep in mind this is not one to one as there is other information that also needs to be in the GPU memory at the same time. So while the current DAG, which is about 1.3 GB and even with the overhead should comfortably fit with 2GB of GPU memory, at some point the file will become large enough that you would need a 3GB card to run it.

If you are looking to buy a GPU for gaming and to mine things like ETH on the side, yes it can be a bit of extra income. If you are looking solely to profit off ETH by buying new hardware and expecting to pay it off and keep on earning profit afterwards, you may be disappointed.

 Don't. Just don't. Total waste of electricity trying to mine Scrypt with a GPU - ASICs blew all GPUs out of the water for Scrypt 2+ years ago.


 Any of the Maxwell-based cards can be profitable, if you pick the right (NON-SHA256 NON-SCRYPT) altcoin and your electric is fairly cheap.

It will work for some cards such as R7 270X from AMD. But the DAG size rises about 200MB per 6 months, so it will last some time in the future.

The Ethereum is planned to change into PoS by the end of the year, so the 2GB cards should be OK for the Ethereum mining.
