Has anyone been in a position where bitcoin was the only possible way for you to pay for something (or would have been if it was a payment option)?

For instance, trying to shop online outside of your country, or buy airline tickets, your card is rejected or doesn't work, and bitcoin would be the only feasible alternative...

I had this recently while traveling in South Africa, ran out of data on a Sunday, phone shop was closed but managed to use a local wallet to top up my data plan in about 5 seconds...

Once when I was out of the country doing some tourism I didn't have the ability to pay with anything without going first to the offices to get my money converted into this other local currency and it was a mess, I wish I could find Bitcoin merchants on that situation.

i travelled abroad and didnt want to touch my native fiat in a foreign currency as the banks wanted to charge a huge fee. bitcoin was useful then.

i know this is a negative story, but many people get hit by the cryptolock scam software and the only payment method is bitcoin, so it was useful for them too
another negative story, ... silk road.. need not say more about them druggies

I took some on my phone for exactly this reason when i was abroad. I never actually needed to use them though and i was a bit concerned that tsa would try and confiscate/steal them.

It has never happened to me, and I really doubt it will happen anytime soon. I use to see just the opposite thing: fiat, and at times only cash (not even credit card allowed) as my only payment option.

When trying to send money overseas or receive money overseas, bitcoin is the best option as it has no fees and is instant. I wish people did it more than using services like western union and moneygram and paying huge fees.

This would be possible where i live without some sort of BTC->Bank transfer processor like Cashilla. Otherwise i am limited to where i can actually spend my Bitcoins.

I had this recently while traveling in South Africa, ran out of data on a Sunday, phone shop was closed but managed to use a local wallet to top up my data plan in about 5 seconds...

this happened to me in my first few months when i
started using btc and converting it into fiat, but one time
my cash was not enough to pay my electric bill so i needed
to convert it into cash but the process is quite long so i still continue
to convert my btc but the electric company branch will be closing at 5pm
and my btc conversion is still long. so i just gamble and go to the
building and ask if they know bitcoin and luckily they do and said
they also accept btc as a payment for electricity, so i ask if all
the branches are accepting btc as a payment but they said that
it is still only available in some brances but they are working on
making it available on every braches they have. since then
i use btc for my electric bill and also my water bill. saves me a lot of
time.

I use bitcoin sometimes fo payments stuff if there is a good deal online. In the real world or store I have paid bitcoin only one store, because I wanted to try if it works.
But for now I am not purchasing or buying stuff. I am kinda holding it for the holidays.

Well I've been in the situation where I have absolutely no fiat in my bank account or on my person, but I've had bitcoin on my phone.  The problem is, there's very few places to spend it, and there's not really any good ways to convert it to fiat quickly.  When I had a Coinbase account, that took about a day which isn't bad.  But when you have to eat or flee a country on a plane, you need that cash now

When merchants start accepting bitcoin for bread and circuses, we will have arrived.

Nope, this shit scam software was using Moneygram and western union before bitcoin so it's not the only payment method for those scammers.

Personally not, luckily enough. I don't mind to use bitcoin at all, but I would hate it if all my other options got compromised somehow..

I read a story around a year ago of someone who actually managed to finish his travels because of bitcoin. Creditcard got blocked or something, but by selling bitcoin for cash, he could keep traveling.

Very soon merchants will start accepting Bitcoin because few multinational companies have already started using bitcoins just like few E-Commerce site and may be in about 3 - 5 years people will start using BTC for daily needs

Yes I think so too that will happen where I live now I see 3 store that accept bitcoin.
So yeah in the future there will be more stores that will accept.

I have ever been to that point but always found a way out. When I started trading with the bitcoins, i had made a promise to avoid using the coins as the normal dollars in running my daily transactions. There is just this respect that I have given to the coins and wont imagine using them on the very basic things. When going out, I always make sure that I have my cards in place and I dont plan to use the coins anytime soon.

That's true not everything you can buy with paypal or with debit card, sometimes bitcoin is cheaper and the only way to pay with.

bitcoin as my only payment option is currently not possible. there are not many places that accept bitcoin. From shopping at the supermarket up to paying electricity, credit cards, car loans, telephone bills.. all not really possible right now.

Any specific things you've come across?  I'm trying to think of real world examples where bitcoin is the only option...
