WOW who is the person that tipped someone in r/funny WOW I think people who know nothing about PR shouldn't be doing PR for bitcoin, it just exploded in there face. Cause if your trying to spread it to other people why do it in a place that A) People aren't that geared towards learning about new things and B) half the people in r/funny wouldn't even know how to run the bitcoin wallet. This is another poor attempt at spreading the word of bitcoin.

but guerrilla marketing is actually doing research on people who actually adopt and benefit then go after them not just spam it, that will turn people off.

To hijack a popular thread at the cost of a few bitcents is a quite cost effective way to expose a buttload of people to bitcoin, even if divergence losses are pretty high.

I don't see too many people getting annoyed there.  Mostly just people asking questions about it (isn't that a good thing?).

Certainly, having a +tip in every thread on every reddit would be a bit much, but I don't see the problem with giving decent-sized tips sparingly here and there.

Neither do I, I didn't look. I was responding to the argument only. Not all exposure is good. And imo associating with low rent spam tactics is worse than being know as the Currency of Evil ^TM

Yes, I can agree to that!

It is a good way to expose people to Bitcoin, but use it sparingly, and give amounts that actually matter (not 0.00001 BTC or something)!

I've only allowed it in bitcoin(ish) related subreddits for now.  People can only tip outside of bitcoin(ish) related subreddits if they pay 2 BTC to the bot.  That's a little high and will probably come down in the future, but it helps ensure that only people who care are the ones using it all over reddit.

Someone who saw the r/funny tip actually figured out Bitcoin and gave it a try. He even offered his experience as commentary. I'd say that was a worthwhile tip strategy but obviously it needs to be approached sensibly and not like a spam bot.

I think this was quite educational - for one thing, when promoting Bitcoin to newbies don't ask them to use the Qt client. Suggest blockchain or Electrum or similar so they don't get too hammered right up front.

You know that hurts the bitcoin network, we need more FULL NODES, hence why it is in beta, it isn't for people that don't understand why the use of it is so important. This is exactly why people shouldn't introduce people that don't understand the network and just want to dive in.

I disagree. It doesn't hurt Bitcoin - it simply doesn't help Bitcoin in that way. Are you suggesting that we don't want to introduce new users to Bitcoin? Judging by what I've being seeing for the last year and a half that is one of the main thrusts in this community. Everyone rejoices when more new users get exposed.

IMO the Qt client will improve and one day be usable by newbies. Maybe some newbies will be willing to put up with it, but turning off new users because we demand they use that client is not beneficial to Bitcoin. Otherwise why do we bother developing all these alternatives?

Supporting the network is great and everyone who can manage that should. But expecting new users to do that is only going to discourage adoption.

I started a bitcoind node on my miner 2 days ago and it still hasn't downloaded the blockchain fully. As that user on reddit pointed out - he gave up and looked for other options. I have another bitcoind node on my server in Chicago. For users like me and you - great, run nodes. For others, I say do what they can to use Bitcoin according to their needs.

Absolute not we should never stop growth or exposer. I am just saying lets be a little bit smarter as to who we target, and lets get people who can really help the community. I don't know if you really look into the under belly of bitcoin, but we need more full nodes and we need more people that have the know how to run bleeding edge test builds for developers. Plus creative sites have really taken a nose dive.

Why do we need more full nodes?  70k nodes storing the EXACT same information across all of them isn't enough?  I'd say that 700 would be enough myself... as long as the nodes cannot practically collaborate with each other, it would be fine...

Cause the more full nodes running the better protected the bitcoin network will be. The stronger it will be against attacks. Remember we are still a pretty small community, in another 3-5yrs we maybe under powered for the growth, so I think is good to start thinking about that now.

Mining protects the network.  The number of nodes does nothing more than verify that every node has the correct data.  I don't see any attack vector involving the number of nodes except on those relying on them for lite clients.
