Why is it so difficult to mine namecoin?

I mean the wallet itself is not a dedicated program on its own.

In my opinion, alt coins are not as widely used as Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is more worth it.

Difficult to mine namecoin? not at all, on a lot of pools you can get them for free with your Bitcoin mining.
The wallet is a dedicated program - it is a wallet, not mining software (when wallets contain miners they tend to be sub optimal and most have dropped this now)
Mining programs are software that are used to mine with. I use and recommend cgminer https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

Whilst NMC was a great idea it has never taken off as a p2p DNS system, currently it is mainly used as extra income for BTC miners - the price is trending down as a result

if your doing bitcoin it really isn't a question of cost, because the same miner can be used with no ill effects on your bitcoin mining.  Many pools offer BTC and namecoin mining, but some are starting to drop namecoin support for lack of interest.

Here is their page which is always a good starting point, but to be honest it looks like the project has been abandoned.
