Lurk,

What is the main motivator for most folks giving out free Bitcoins? Cheap way to advertise or do demand creation for a website or product?

I've seen it used as a viral gateway to drive social media buzz about a service (Blockchain.info) In that example if the new user Tweeted that they had just created a Blockchain.info account the service gives you 0.02 BTC in return.

The cost in USD equates $0.27 given current rates so I can see how it would be cheaper for them to use this type of incentive instead of paying the average $1.25 - $1.50 USD to Facebook, Twitter, or Google to acquire 1 new App or Website user.

Thanks for the information.

Best Regards,

-DJohnston
