A self-proclaimed country off the coast of Portugal. making it “the first country in the world” to make bitcoin its official currency, as its prime minister Joby Weeks announced.

It was bought by Renato Barros in 2007.. He is living there with his family..

I agree with this.
It's cool and all that, but it's so small so it does not really matter.

Well I'm not surprised that a small country would be interested in declaring such a valued currency as it's official currency, however I doubt this actually means such in the real world. If the country had more resources, was a bit more of a voice in the political assemblies, among other things, and then I'd take it more seriously.

http://www.coinspeaker.com/2015/12/15/micronation-calling-itself-atlantis-adopted-bitcoin-as-national-currency/

Quote
If I decide I want to have a national song, I can choose it, and I can change it any time. The same with my flag – it could be blue today, red tomorrow. Of course, my power is only absolute here, where I am the true sovereign,” he added.

Now Prince Renato Barros dares to talk about the future and says that his good relations with the Brazilian Government could one day open the door of entry to Europe. By the way the island is in the process of being renamed Atlantis after the mythical lost civilization.

Getting a new status of national currency can have a good impact on bitcoin development. There is a possibility to establish a centralised Bitcoin bank and anchor to corporations that can legally represent cryptocurrency fueled companies across the world and cyberspace.

The idea of having a small country with a Bitcoin-based economy is not new. The Isle of Man, a self-governing nation of around 80,000 people, has been attempting to lure Bitcoin-based companies for the past 18 months.

Barros not only contributes to the promotion of bitcoin, but inspires to follow your dreams, no matter how increadible they are. “Our lives are gone in a flash. My son is 27 and if I were his age, I would probably sell the island and buy a Ferrari. But I am 56 years old, and I want to enjoy everything I have. Pontinha means “a point”. All change in the world begins with something very small, and this is my country – just a little point.”

I suggest that Pontinha's flag be a solid orange with a relatively small black point in its middle.

Those who pledge their allegiance to Pontinha would fly its flag at their place of residency or business.

If its only an small isle with only one family i will not call it a country. There are small countries that are only one town, but i think that they have a big amount of people.

It's good to hear. Now the BTC price will go up even more! I hope that they denominate everything in BTC though, unrelated to USD or other fiat currencies so that it can help the price stabilise a bit Wink

Watch out for the USA attacking this country in order to 'liberate'  it.

To visualize, this is what I propose, albeit the black dot could be a tad larger, but not by much.

I don't think the price will go up that significantly, i mean it's just a small nation bought by a person just to live with his family, so i don't expect much from this news regarding the price of Bitcoin Roll Eyes
But i gotta say, this news is unique in its own way Tongue
Is his island for sale for BTC Roll Eyes

It is not as the media tells. Pontinha actually belongs to the Island of Madeira which is part of Portugal. So, "Prince Renato" from Pontinha will always be forced to use Euros and abide by the Laws of Portugal.

Not a country and no one lives there.

He can make the Zimbabwe dollar his 'official' currency, no one cares.
