I can see the need for an API, but truthfully, I'm glad I can't post the same things to Facebook/Twitter/Google+. They're different mediums and, as such, serve different purposes. I think this is part of why analysis of social networks falls flat so many times. Google+ isn't Google's alternative to Facebook. It's not a carbon copy. It's for different things.
I think that privacy is a different topic of discussion. That being said, for most of these services, if you're going to post something, it should be assumed that you're doing it publicly. Facebook is sort of the exception, in that you have to approve people to be your friends before they can see your stuff (if you set up your privacy settings first), but the company is also trying really hard to move towards public sharing which is problematic for users who can't ever know how their content will be displayed.

I use facebook because I've been there a long time.

i think it's Facebook because its was my first social network. It was so hype back then so i just follow around.

Facebook have the largest number of people and is probably the best. Some might say that there are a lot of nonsense there like what I believe many years ago but you can just set your settings as per your taste since there are also lots of informative groups and pages there.
