Average users can help bitcoin, too. Gavin is looking for people to help test version 0.7.2, the next bugfix version of Bitcoin-Qt / bitcoind. If you are more adventurous, the much improved, faster next version (0.8 ) needs lots of testing, too. Especially on Windows. |

I have this installed and am running it but I have no idea what constitutes to a test. Would be great if you could give me some instructions or link to a post where I could find them. |

What's confusing me is how there are a couple 0.6.x branches, and no 0.7.x branches at all. If some code has been merged into master which will become 0.8 and development is still going on for 0.7 where are those commits being merged? Into the 0.6.3 branch? |

That makes more sense. I dislike doing things manually so I'm trying to make ebuilds to do the compiling and installation for me, but it was difficult to know which branches/repositories to point them at.

All development is on the main branch ("master"). What will become 0.8 is what you get when you clone git://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.git |

There are already ebuilds. layman -a bitcoin to get more (including 9999 for latest git master). |

That doesn't help. What is the exact git command to try the 0.8 version? You assume I know git. I don't. If you have git already installed, just type: git clone https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.git

That is normal. The version does not become "0.8" until release day. |

I cloned from git and built source. It appears to be re-downloading blocks again on top of what was already present from the PPA install. I removed that package now and tried again with -loadblock options as suggest in pruning thread. It's still re-downloading.
Am I right in thinking that it's now processing blocks from dat files into the leveldb (coins, blocks dirs)? It's still taking a while. Are there any files I can delete after as no longer needed?
And do I have to wait for this to finish before I can use normally. The getvlockcount rpc call is reporting around 140000 now but going up fairly slowly.
