I think that this kind of reaction within people against cryptocurrencies is because their prices have declined considerably. But, such movements in price doesn't indicate that a specific coin is dead. All of this is similar to stocks where there are some which rise and others that fall in value, but they're still existent and actively traded on the market. The same thing happens with any kind of cryptocurrency today.

We cannot say that an altcoin is dead the moment we see prices fall. That's the normal behavior of cryptocurrencies since they're volatile by design. What really tells us if a coin is dead or not, is if such coin lacks development, and support from its community and dev team. Right now, most altcoins are being actively developed and supported by their communities. If you were to consider good altcoins to buy that would last for quite a long time, then look no further as mostly the coins within the top 10 rankings in market cap are the most prominent in features and development. My suggestion would be to buy and hold Ethereum, NEO, and Litecoin as much as you can.

It's not final yet, coinbase says they are planning to list Cardano, so let's hope it will happen.

You've got to do your own research to determine which project is the best one in terms of future vision and purpose. There are lot of altcoins out there in the market which don't provide real uses to the mainstream world and are just quick money grabs by the devs. That's why, it's wise to check out all the information related to a specific altcoin you're investing into before making a decision.
