Bitcoin NFC credit card terminal equivalent

I was just wondering if any work is being done on a Bitcoin NFC credit card terminal equivalent?

I imagine it would work like this... the signed transaction would be transfered from the mobile device to the terminal (which has internet connectivity). The terminal can check how many coins are available on the given account and then distribute the transaction throughout the bitcoin network. For large transactions, a delay shold be enough to raise the level of trust to whatever is required by the terminal owner (probably 6 blocks for very large transactions).
