  • 2x 5830
  • MSI 870-G45 AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard (picked up from Newegg open box for 32 bucks)
  • AMD Sempron 140 Sargas 2.7GHz Socket AM3 45W Single-Core Processor SDX140HBGQBOX
  • HD and Memory are already laying around.

Specs for the 5830 (taken from retailer website) say it pulls 500w from the powersupply . I currently have an 850w psu.  If i decide to plug in the second card is it better that i buy a 1200w powersupply or is there something else I can probably use safely?

Thanks!

You can probably get away with a 650-700w for the two 5830's unless you want to make sure you'll have headroom for more cards.  The 850W is fine.

Though, you'll likely not find the 5830's in stock anywhere, so I wouldn't use those power numbers until you can find the cards Wink

That motherboard is a kick ass little thing, build several PCs with it.

You should be totally fine with the 850, especially with the Sempron.. I think it is 65w?

You should be fine as long as the PSU isn't low quality.

Specs for the 5830 (taken from retailer website) say it pulls 500w from the powersupply .

Specs are wrong. A single 5830 will draw anywhere from 155 - 185 Watts. Your Sempron 140 system (CPU/RAM/MB) will draw anywhere from 55 - 80 Watts. 185 x 2 + 80 = 450 Watts not including hard/optical drives or other peripherals. Your 850 Watt PSU is fine for 2+ 5830s and your system.

Not that you need more agreement, but that PS should be fine.

I've got two systems running quad-5830s OC'd 950/300, 1 7200RPM HDD, 3 200mm fans, 2 140mm fans, Sempron 140 on an MSI 890FXA-GD70 and they draw just under 670 Watts under full load.  I'm using a Corsair TX-950 which leaves a bit of headroom - more headroom than I anticipated.

I am running dual 5830's using a 550W PSU. I am getting a 850W, arriving on Thursday, I'll be consolidating my cards into a single system.

Exactly.  I assumed that was the best way to measure the power usage.
