I don't have the kind of computer with 4 top-of-the-line GPUs to solo mine. I have just an average computer. My question is can I make a significant amount of Bitcoins if I join a pool?
The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Significant is a subjective term.

But most likely... no. CPU mining is near useless unless your power is free.

If you have an ATI/AMD card 5000-6000 series (some 4000) it might be worth it.
