I unfortunately just recently started looking into BTC and ALT coins and while there is a ton of information here it is hard for me to discern good info from bad.  It seems like a lot of the things people post are either ads or sarcastic comments to steer people away.  Any tips on who to trust?

Build your own trust list. Use DefaultTrust for a little bit. As you interact with the community, find the people you think are trustworthy and build your own trust lists. As you do that, also build your own ignore list. You can start with DannyHamilton's list here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=973843.0. It includes pretty much everyone that wears a sig ad (which unfortunately includes me) since most people with sig ads will spam. As you interact with the community, build your own ignore list.

Yep, that's about it.  I'd do some reading here if I were you, before you make any big decisions.  There are definitely some knowledgeable people here, but there are some scoundrels as well--many of them.  Take a look at some of the older threads from when bitcoin was just taking off and everyone here spoke English.  There's some good stuff.

Also to reiterate:  trust yourself, no one else.

It is as in every other field, never trust information from various websites. I would suggest to post your questions here. People then can easily verify information. Kinda swarm intelligence.  Cool

Thanks, that was pretty helpful even though you have a sig ad lol.

Well, my sarcastic comments are either meant to be funny or steer(make them feel bad about) them away from spamming their paid sigs, asking the same dumb question every time, when they can just use the search function.
TF, the guy who started it all must be laughing his ass off.
Edit:

Your comments have no meaning at all, except hijacking others thread about "how wrong the negative trust given to you" is. And no, none of your comments are funny

Don't just go by this alone someone can buy an account with this.   Also it is not always accurate.  I would do more research to make sure the person is not gaining something off the info.

For if you see referral links or short links, then give it a second glance as there could be a motive for the person in making money.  So I guess try to get a "fair" opinion that is not going to make money off you.

Try to build your trust list, and don't believe every poster , there is trusted members with high green ranks posting useful threads , so you can follow them and read their topics, that's may help you a lot.

You don't.  You need to do your research before you trust anything.  You need to determine whether or not the individual is trust worthy and whether or not they have anything to gain from what they are telling you.  Just because they are higher members with trust does not always mean they are right.

I think it's best to take various sources for any information. Info of one person is normally just an opinion

Always check multiple sources. If various sources say the same thing, is likely correct. Also, if you're new, check out the tutorials on my website. They'll get you started. Or at least use them to verify information you get from somewhere else.

Just had a look at DannyHamilton's ignore list.....I'm not on it Grin

I'm on the 'double check list' along with the likes of shorena, Litecoinguy, tspacepilo, Quickseller etc who carry sigs but 'create reasonably intelligent posts'.

You have brain and you are using it sir  Wink. You see a lot of comments which are not usefull for you, but they are may be usefull for the others.
Trust yourself and your opinion. If in doubt just ask questions. You never know what is a primary reason for people to talk with you.

for bitcoin you don't need to look any further than bitcoin.org, for altcoin, the altcoin section is good

but my suggestion is to not lose yourself too much there, look at the top 10 only, the rest are rubbish pure clone of bitcoin

Trust no one without good reason to. How do you normally work out how to trust in real life? You can only judge people for yourself but look at their post history and see how helpful they have been in the past. You can also look at a users rank or trust. Two users I like are dannyhamilton and shorena as they are very helpful and knowledgeable but I suppose it depends on what you need help with as there are many other great users here.
