Saudi Arabia executes 47 prisoners, including opposition Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr

Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday it had executed 47 prisoners convicted of terrorism charges, including al-Qaeda detainees and a prominent Shia cleric who rallied protests against the government.

The execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr is expected to deepen discontent among Saudi Arabia's Shia minority and heighten sectarian tensions across the region.

Meanwhile, the execution of al-Qaeda militants convicted over deadly bombings and shootings in Saudi Arabia raised concerns over revenge attacks. The extremist group's branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, threatened violence against Saudi security forces last month if they carried out executions of members of the global network.

Saudi Arabia's top cleric Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh said the executions were carried out in line with Islamic law and the need to safeguard the kingdom's security. He described the executions as a "mercy to the prisoners" because it would save them from committing more evil acts and prevent chaos.

Another Middle East situation that doesn't seem to have any possible good results for the West. Whatever this cleric did or didn't do to pose a national security challenge to Saudi Arabia, Iran has already warned of retaliation. The execution might be seen as a deliberate challenge to Iran, with its dominant variant brand of Islam, and further underscores the apparent inability of Islam to live up to its self-adopted label of the 'religion of peace.'

No, it does not.  When the various sects have all killed each other off, it will be very peaceful.

Saudi Arabia Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Iran, Foreign Minister Says

 - Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran on Sunday, responding to the storming of its embassy in Tehran in an escalating row between the rival Middle East powers over Riyadh's execution of a Shi'ite Muslim cleric.

Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a news conference in Riyadh that the envoy of Shi'ite Iran had been asked to quit Saudi Arabia within 48 hours. The kingdom, he said, would not allow the Islamic republic to undermine its security.

Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran early on Sunday and Shi'ite Iran's top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, predicted "divine vengeance" for the execution of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, an outspoken opponent of the ruling Al Saudi family.

Jubeir said the attack in Tehran was in line with what he said were earlier Iranian assaults on foreign embassies there and with Iranian policies of destabilizing the region by creating "terrorist cells" in Saudi Arabia.

"The kingdom, in light of these realities, announces the cutting of diplomatic relations with Iran and requests the departure of delegates of diplomatic missions of the embassy and consulate and offices related to it within 48 hours. The ambassador has been summoned to notify them," he said.
Speaking on Iranian state television, Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in Tehran's first response that by cutting diplomatic ties, Riyadh could not cover up "its major mistake of executing Sheikh Nimr."

The United States, Saudi Arabia's biggest backer in the West, responded by encouraging diplomatic engagement and calling for leaders in the region to take "affirmative steps" to reduce tensions.
"We believe that diplomatic engagement and direct conversations remain essential in working through differences and we will continue to urge leaders across the region to take affirmative steps to calm tensions," an official of President Barack Obama's administration said.

I don't know how SA can do such things , Sheikh AlNimr was only demanding for the rights of Shia in Saudi Arabia
they accused him of being terrorist just for demanding for his people rights !!
in the other hand they are supporting Sunnis in Syria who have weapons and are launching their rockets to the civilians in the safe cities in the name of freedom and democracy
US should do something about this and so all SA's allies

The last thing these Saudis want would be a civil war in the Southern and Eastern parts of the country, where Shiite Arabs are a majority. Already tensions are running high, as a result of the Saudi invasion of Yemen. The lack of availability of the fire-arms is the only thing that keeps the Shiites from rebelling. But Iran can change that situation.

Saudi Arabia is the leading exporter of Wahhabi terrorists around the world. The only solution, which Western countries are starting to accept is an independent Shia state along the Persian Gulf.

That is true. If it weren't for US support, a lot of countries in the Middle East would have tried attacking Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia controls the holiest sites of Islam and other countries can't stand this.

The Saudis Go Full ISIS

In Their US-Backed Takfiri War on the Shia

Updated: January 5, 2016 by Dan Sanchez

January 5, 2016—Saudi Arabia has perpetrated a mass execution that puts ISIS’s beach beheadings to shame. Forty-seven heads rolled on Saturday. One of them belonged to Nimr al-Nimr, a revered Shi’ite cleric who had been sentenced to death for sermons in which he criticized the government (especially for its persecution of the country’s Shi’ite minority). His brother has been sentenced to be crucified.

This was done as the Saudis continue to drop American bombs on Shia in Yemen (boosting Al Qaeda there) and to hire jihadis to help ISIS and Al-Qaeda kill Shia in Syria.

It is no mystery why the Saudis are such brothers in arms with the Bin Ladenites, sharing both their hyper-sectarian aims and their gruesome methods. The Wahhabist Saudis and the Salafist terrorists are both “Takfiris”: theocratic, fundamentalist Sunnis who justify sectarian persecution and bloodshed on the grounds that their victims are not true Muslims, but apostates.

Both the Saudis and ISIS regularly behead people for apostasy. The Saudis just do it in white robes and with swords, while ISIS does it in black pajamas and with knives. Saudi Arabia (the older, bigger oil rich extremist theocracy between the two) has been aptly characterized as “An ISIS That Has Made It.” The Saudis are so sensitive about this obvious comparison, they threaten to sue anyone who makes it. ....more

I a still wondering why the Saudi Shiites are not revolting against the ruling family. They can easily get the weapons from across the border in Yemen, where the Shiite Houthis are fighting the Saudi-led alliance. This is the perfect time to stage a rebellion against the monarchy. The Saudis are trapped in Yemen and Syria, and their coffers are fast depleting as a result of the low oil prices.
