Hey everyone

I am a newbie to the bitcoin world but I managed to set up an ubuntu mining system with the help of this guide: http://forum.bitcoin.org/?topic=7514.0
By googling I found instructions on how to connect poclbm.py and phoenix.py properly to fetch work from my pool. Looking at the hash/s I assume that poclbm.py uses cpu while phoenix.py uses gpu. Is that correct?
Now there is also bitcoin as well as bitcoind, the headless client. Do I need to run one of them, too? I am confused which programs I have to run in order to mine correctly.

Regards

They're two different miners.
poclbm info here:  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Poclbm
phoenix info here:  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Phoenix_miner

You should pick whichever one gets you the best hash rate and run it.  You don't need to run both.

Some pools have their own custom miners they recommend running.

There's also Diablo, info here:  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/DiabloMiner

Various other miners as well, run the one that gives the best hash rate on your rig, and the one that you're most comfortable with technologically:  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Category:Miners
