I had read about exchanges like VirWox and The Rock offering to convert my L$ to Bitcoins so I thought I would try it.  I tried with a smaller amount initially (15,000 L$) but then I found out Second Life apparently doesn't let you move L$ out unless you have been active for at least 30 days.  Even so, now I'm reading that 99% of people in Second Life don't pass their Risk API which means exchanges won't take them from you.  So now I'm stuck with those.

Then I found that you don't actually need to even transfer the L$ into Second Life as VirWox would let you purchase them outside of it.  So I went ahead with that as well and they have locked my account.

I'm not too fussed about it as they are fairly small amounts but I don't think I'll ever touch another L$.  It seems I'm stuck with them now.  Has anyone used this method?  What was your experience?  Any suggestions?

VirWox would let you purchase them outside of it.  So I went ahead with that as well and they have locked my account.

There are a lot of people who have purchased L$ (SLL) with credit card or other funds and then trade those SLL for BTC and withdraw the BTCs.  It may be a day or so before the BTCs that you withdraw are sent, but that's different from a locked account.

Because they accommodate a lot of reversible payment methods they probably get hit a lot, so they jump to protective mode if an account does anything out of the norm.  Maybe that's what happened.  Their support is generally responsive.  Have you given them a fair amount of time to respond?

I'm still waiting for them to respond.  VirWox is reputable from what I've read so I'm hoping they will at least return the funds.  I don't think I did anything out of the norm though so can't imagine what triggered them to lock my account.  I'm living in Malta at the moment and there aren't a lot of options here for purchasing BTCs.

As for the SLLs I have on my avatar, I'm now reading that there are people who trade within Second Life and can transfer it back to my Paypal - at about a 20-30% loss though it seems.

Either way, it seems I've run out of options here for purchasing BTCs.  Will have to wait until I travel abroad to buy them.  Actually I could probably use Western Union but that gets really expensive.

If you setup a brand new avatar on Second Life and try to move funds to VirWox straight away, it might raise the risk factor and same with VirWox.

I have used Second Life for around 4 years so everything was ok with me based on the age of my Avatar and I used PayPal for my first direct deposit into VirWox.

I also emailed the, after a few weeks to let then know what I am doing within Second Life.

VirWox do like to know where the money is coming from at times, as Second Life can be strict on them with the API risk factor.

I've had luck with this but like you had trouble initially.  The key factor I found was to have a valid payment method on file with 2nd Life for at least 30 days. Quite literally on the 31st day things started going through without any problem at all.  Also, after I executed some trades with VirWox I email their support and asked about the RiskAPI issues.  Before I reached the 30 days described above they granted me a manual override (L$5000 per week if I recall)--very low limit but it let me start moving some of my L$.  They didn't say it but I suspect they have to be cautious about both fraud and AML issues.  I didn't have any lock out issues so I can't comment there but like one other poster said, their support is pretty responsive.

I had no problem. I logged into my long-unused SL account, found a virwox terminal, transferrred the bulk of my SLL and then went to virwox to create a buy order, which was fulfilled in fairly fast order.

Have you tried buying bitcoins with ukash vouchers?

I tried VirWox about a year ago via paypal
There seemed to be no problems initially, but when I went to log in a day later to withdraw my bitcoins I found my account was locked. I emailed them and they explained that they locked it because of my Chinese ip address, but immediately unlocked it after my email.
I think they are just cautious, but seem quick to respond once they see you are human.

VirWox did.  I'm still waiting for a response from them.  Not sure what their normal response time is.

I wouldn't do that...

Why not?

I can't buy ukash vouchers in Malta.

I guess I should write an email to Second Life support giving them a heads up on what I'm doing.  Either way, hopefully VirWox will work out and I will be able to skip that step in the future.  Just have to wait out the 30 days now.

Off topic, I had heard about Second Life a long time ago.  Actually saw it for the first time yesterday.  I can't believe people "play" it.  I mean, I used to be a big fan of World of Warcraft, but Second Life is too much like life with bad graphics.  Weird.

If you can fund a YANDEX.RU account through bank deposit and then fund an Interkassa account through Yandex then you can fund/trade on btc-e.com by funding it through interkassa.

OR

If you have a russian bank issued credit card.
