And I think the answer to the "do BTC pose a threat to legacy systems?" question is...

...no. For now at least. In a few years' time, if cryptocurrency - especially bitcoin - is well matured and established technology, then definitely yes, I would foresee it at least partially replacing legacy fiat payment channels. And, in this scenario, BTC1 might trade above $100, probably $1000 even.
