I've always wondered what the name means, and I hate how I keep calling it "Mount Gox", since mount is what I default to upon seeing "mt", but, well, that really sounds stupid. Perhaps it stands for Market?

Does anyone have any information about this?

It is a recycled domain, it used to be the Magic The Gathering Online eXchange.

I like to think of it now as MagicalTux's Good Old eXchange.  Grin

I was thinking it was a play on words of Fort Knox. Instead of a fort its a mountain and gox rhymes with Knox. But the more I think about it that's probably not it. Since Mt might not even stand for mount. as in a mountain.

The market can obviously bear it.

Some competition would be nice, however.

Still around.

They take lots of legal and financial risks by running such a large exchange. I say they deserve every bitpenny they get. But yes, competition is good.

I had also thought it's Mt Gox because it rhymes with Fort Knox, and Mt because the currency is won by mining.  Roll Eyes

It better be.  When you think about, a well known structure, guarded by humans born with flaws, that can be easily destroyed, assaulted or besieged with the right amount of angry people who want gold when the dollar falls and other governments with unlimited funding and destructive weapons.

Invest in bitcoin, the ideaology and the currency.
