i followed one chain down the visualization tree and ended up in a 2000 coin address not touched

for about a year

I haven't done any blockchain analysis of it, but I'm assuming they got moved to other Mt Gox 'cold' wallets where they were gradually siphoned off by whoever stole the rest of them.

If anyone has more info than that, then bitcoin fame awaits! Everyone would love to know what happened to those coins.

Mark Karpeles does not have access to those coins, even if he holds the private keys still. Also, it is likely that he will never get access again if all his stuff is seized, which may contain parts of the private key.
