An effort to clear out some of the grey area regarding things which are not specifically against the forum rules, but are considered immoral/wrong by community members. The community is getting bigger and we see a lot of threads where users are having trouble deciding whether the negative trust someone received was right or wrong. So maybe this can be served as a guide on what is considered wrong by the community and should therefore be avoided.

So kindly suggest the things which you consider to be wrong/immoral on the forum.

To start,

0. Don't Scam and/or try to scam in any way.
1. Don't ask for loans without proper collateral if you are not a trusted member, specially if you are a newbie. [Thx to elite3000 for suggestion] [Read this for more detailed explanation of this.] [and this]
2. Don't refuse to use escrow. [If a party is willing to cover the fee, then there should be no problems with using one.]
3. Don't sell stolen/cracked/carded stuff.
4. Don't promote Scam/Potentially scam sites.
5. Don't escrow your own trades.
6. Don't bid on items in an auction if you don't wish to buy.
7. Avoid buying/selling forum accounts.
8. Don't post personal information of members, unless it is necessary, for ex. in case of a scam.
9. Don't attempt to farm or buy trust. [Thx to knightdk for suggestion]
10. Avoid giving positive trust for smaller-trades/loans/escrow, if you are from default trust list, a neutral should suffice to document the trade. [Thx to Omikifuse for suggestion]
11. Don't Lie. Especially when doing trades, lying is considered shady and it might make you look suspicious and untrustworthy.
12. Don't ask for donations unless you're part of a registered charity and the address for funds is directly of the organization and not personal.
13. Avoid talking/discussing to yourself/your own alt. [Got this suggestion from here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1352505.0]
14. Don't "Shill Bid" on your own auctions, this practice is considered shady and scam as you're duping the other members into thinking that someone else is bidding on your auction. [Got this suggestion from here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1436577.0;all]
15. ?

Let me know if something should be added or removed. Smiley

In addition to above, these forum etiquette are expected from good community members but aren't considered enough for negative feedback. Although, not following some of these suggestions repeatedly, may get you banned, especially "0".

0. Read Forum Rules and follow them.
1. Be civil. Insulting other members because of personal differences, race, gender or for any other reason is considered ill-mannered.
2. Search the other posts to see if your topic is already covered.
3. Don't give bad/wrong advice to other members (especially to newbies, who are new to Bitcoin and this forum)
4. Don't write the whole post in CAPS as it is considered shouting.
5. Don't hijack thread for the sake of whatever you would like to promote in someone's else thread. [Thx to SFR10 for suggestion]
6. Be helpful to other forum members.
7. Report to moderators if you feel someone is breaking the rules of the forum.
8. Report in "Scam accusation" section with proofs if you feel someone is trying to scam.
9. ?

3 technically is against the rules because the good traded must be legal in the buyer and seller's jurisdictions, and I think trade stolen and hacked things is illegal everywhere.

And I would write: don't ask for loan without collateral if you are not a trusted member, specially if you are a newbie

Responding here so I can have this thread handy for future reference. Especially for ponzi promoters. Most of this falls under the "Don't be a dick" rules anyway.  Wink

I would like to add one for #8 which is not included in the unofficial rules thread but it's forbidden: 8. Don't hijack thread for the sake of whatever you would like to promote in someone's else thread.
I see a lot of those posts specially in service section.

I can't recall if it's against the forum rules explicitly, but it's definitely frowned upon to post crap like "+1" and other one word replies to things, especially if you're in a sig campaign.  Shitposting.

I think those are covered under rule 1 of the forum rules:
Quote
1. No zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads. [1]
--
1. Such posts like "SELL SELL SELL", "I agree", "+1", "Support", "Watching", "Interesting", "LOL", "SCAM", "LEGIT", "FAKE", other one word posts, posts consisting mostly of swearing, quote pyramids, useless introduction threads, threads about a topic already recently discussed in several other threads.

Sorry sorry sorry!!!  I just got home from work and was too lazy to actually find where the rules are and look at them.  Thank you, I appreciate that and I mean it.  This is actually one of the things I like about bitcointalk--I'm a member at a few other forums, and the amount of crap posts is staggering.  Sometimes you can scroll through many pages of just quote pyramids and just emoticons and it's just ridiculous.

Added that in the loans without collateral line. Thanks Smiley

As for 3, you're right, although I believe it is upto to the moderators if they interpret the stuff being sold/bought is illegal or not and same way some DT members consider some stuff being sold was acquired wrongfully and they leave negatives for that, so I'll leave it there as a suggestion that if you're selling something which you can't provide proof for that it was acquired rightfully, you may get negative feedback from a DT member.

Don't attempt to farm or buy trust.

Added at 9. Thanks Smiley

Yeah, it might help newbies and other members who don't understand why were they given negatives. Thanks Smiley

Might be good way to call it. Although, I am just adding things which may prevent users from getting negative feedback. A lot of forum etiquette are already covered by mods here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0 but will add something about it in the OP at the bottom.

Thanks Smiley

Added below in forum etiquette as I haven't seen anyone been given negative for hijacking a thread and if someone overdoes it or posts off topic replies then they can be reported and moderators will remove them. Thanks Smiley

These are the best rules I can think of now Smiley
I think these rules might be implemented in the new forum since this one has already become a big garbage and amendments cannot be done now in this forum.

I think 12 is strict because there are many developers here who creates new things and needs some donations to continue. It should not be a hard and first rule to be a part of charity right?

The "rules" listed in this thread are just guidelines, moderators and admins don't have the time nor would be willing to take the effort to start scam hunting. The current rules are fine.

Wouldn't call these rules but suggestions of stuff not liked by most of the community, including DT members.

12 is basically for people who try to do the old charity scam, they come with a story that they're raising funds for this this.. but most of the time its not true, which is why it should be avoided. But if they're really from an organization and they provide proofs and it verifies then there should be no problem, unless ofcourse it is against the rule as suggested by Mickeyb above.

As for developers, I haven't seen anyone asking for donations, if you have seen such threads then please point to me and I'll add about that up there too but I don't think that they get funds without providing collateral or proofs.

I am sure I have seen 1-2 such posts recently, will try to find them and link here and I don't think they were removed. Not aware of that rule either.

Some enterprising folks are circumventing the begging rule by making the subject of the beg an altcoin, thereby hoping you will pay bitcoin to buy their worthless coin.

-snip-
Some enterprising folks are circumventing the begging rule by making the subject of the beg an altcoin, thereby hoping you will pay bitcoin to buy their worthless coin.

I see.. I don't visit the altcoin section at all, so didn't know about that and I doubt they can be stopped or negged for doing this.

Maybe you can add: using affiliate refferal codes in posts (in signatures its fine)... I don't think that one is on the list yet?

Altough, i guess it's a grey area, referal spam is already on the unofficial forum rules, altough i think non-spam reflinks are usually also frowned upon...

Basically, adding referral links in(to) a post is against the official forum rules as well AFAIK. Threads(posts) containing affiliate links in 'em usually get nuked/deleted in no time. Therefore, there isn't any need to add this point here(in the OP).

However, necro-posting isn't a good habit at all IMO </sarcasm>.

1. Be civil. Insulting other members because of personal differences, race, gender or for any other reason is considered ill-mannered.

That is just dumb and doesn't really make any sense at all.
Be civil ?
What YOU may consider civil others may not.. it is a bit subjective and depends on the situation etc.
When it's not subjective it would fall under "personal" Insults, fighting trolling, flaming etc (ACTUAL RULES)
Some of these need to be thought out better.

- Don't sell stolen/cracked/carded stuff ?

How about don't "post" stuff like that too ?

For example i was talking in off-topic about The Fappening and about Piracy etc (in the past)
And i would never post any cracked / pirated stuff or link to any stuff like that here.
Or sell anything shady such as a proceeds from Carding or pirated windows keys etc

I just think common sense is what ya need..

Most of the rules here are interpreted routinely here very differently.
Guys often bend the truth and deny being a liar.
Or they don't think they are scamming just trying to "make money"

I think the be civil thing irks me the most.
conformist lemmings in the hoards usually are keeping their head down.
Which is not productive.
And from my experience the ones pushing the be-nice angle are the scammiest of all.

And how about Noob accounts showing up with 4 posts lipping off veteran crypto guys
and dishing out trade advice ?
Seen any new accounts here posting retarded "buy ethereum" comments lately ?
it's and i quote.. "being used by Microsoft & IBM" so.. buy buy buy it will go to $100 a coin later  Roll Eyes

This is true, but I think it refers more to insulting others for no reason. If I were to call you a cunt with no motive, it would probably fall under that rule. If you did something wrong and I called you a cunt, I don't think I would be persecuted for it.

I don't see why discussion of such topics would be wrong. So long as you weren't giving examples on where to acquire such goods (like pirated movies or carded accounts), I don't see why it would fall under any rule to have your post removed.

I just think common sense is what ya need..
It's been shown repeatedly over time that some people here don't have common sense; asking people to use it wouldn't work.

Unless they are doing something like ban evading, such accounts aren't breaking any rules. Granted it could be seen as immoral to make an account just to shill for something, but if it bothers you ignore it.
Maybe shilling for something should be added to the list, especially if you are getting paid to do it.
