I had a great idea to get more friends interested in paying attention to bitcoin -- just GIVE them a financial stake.
Go buy 10 USB flash drives (cheapest I found were $8 on Amazon). On each flash drive put a clean new wallet with 1 BTC, (or 5 BTC or whatever you can afford). Erase the original wallets from your possession [ just to remove temptation :-) ]. Give one to each of your closest 10 family members or friends and tell them it contains digital currency worth $X. Ask them to hold on to it and keep it safe. Tell them where they can go to check the value. Occasionally, as the price of bitcoin increases, send them emails letting them know "Hey, the value of your thumb drive is now [2X, 3X, 5X, etc.]." If that doesn't get them interested in bitcoin, nothing will.
Friend have a new baby? This is a perfect gift as well. Like a savings bond on steroids+meth+cocaine.

Make sure you back up your wallet regularly! Unlike a bank account, nobody can help you if you lose access to your BTC.

I actually tried giving bitcoin as a wedding present to a couple I know. They said they prefer cash, and I of course obliged. Since then BTC has tippled

If you bury it in the yard like some of these guys suggest, not very long.
