According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Nothing against it really what I'd like to see is more competing physical currencies, but that just isn't possible sadly with the fed's stranglehold on things.

Bitcoin has a lot of momentum. To compete, a cryptocurrency would need to do a lot more than just make a few tweaks to Bitcoin. Maybe a cryptocurrency would have a chance against Bitcoin if it implemented most of the stuff on the hardfork wishlist and had a client that's better than all Bitcoin clients. Or if someone figured out how to prevent double-spending in a decentralized way that's better than Bitcoin's method using mining.

can you move this post (and similar others) to the alternate cryptocurrencies subforum?

That subforum is on my ignore list because I don't want to hear about scamcoins
