Hi everyone,

One month ago Bitcoin caught my eye again. After it dropped dramatically (from $1100 to $150?) i couldnt really be bothered to read any BTC related shit, but i got suprised when i read a new article about the BTC going 400+ again... What is this Bitcoin? How does it work? How is it possible this technology is not dead in a world controlled by what i call 'the eilite'? Is it possible 'the elite' can't get rid of it? Is it really true you can sell one BTC for 400$? How is this thing still alive? How the fuck does it work?

I wanted to find out what this bitcoin really is. For me, as a regular, it felt i had to leave the 'normal'  and 'safe'  internet and had to enter a unknown different area of the internet with some possible dark corners in it. I saw messages and news items everywhere, telling me it was unsafe, telling me it was marvelous, telling me it was next-gen, telling me you will get bankrupt and all kinds of other stuff. I didn't really trusted the whole business until i came across a very decent site which told me in a clear Youtube video what the bitcoin really was. Need information? Call us! Or visit us on our next meeting! It was a video dedicated to normal people like me, instead of financial guru's.

I went back to the internet and wanted to learn more about this system, and altough i'm technician, i was surprised i couldn't understand half of how it works, but the terms 'peer-to-peer' and decentralized really got me thinking. Wait, is it seriously true this 'more or less works like Napster' but 40x more sophisticated, that central banks cannot control? This can only work when people widely accept it? But the price just went up again, so people seem to accept it?

It took me just one day to figure out, that BTC IS revolutionary. I did bought a couple of BTCs and once they arrived in my wallet (and noticed cool stuff like other nodes acknowledge the transcation) it felt like i opened a door, with a new world behind it. A digital world where payments are 'as good as' anonymous, instant, and most important: not controlled by the elite.

I noticed a lot of speculations where BTC lovers are hoping it will eventually reach the 'normal citizen'. Although i'm IT Staff, for some reason the company i bought the BTCs took away the barrier for me to at least take a look at it, and convinced me that BTC is something very unique, very exciting. Altough its future is not yet totally clear, lots of the technique behind it is marvelous, amazing, and normal people like me realize that the more people invest in it, the bigger it gets, and the bigger WE as normal people get.

I think the BTC is revolutionary but is still in the 'dark and unknown area' of the internet for the simple reason i had to push myself though a emotional barrier to buy a couple. That's where  it got developed for good reasons but for it to move on, it needs to leave that area. People need to understand that Bitcoin isnt complex and revolutionary at all, they need to understand that it is 'just another currency'.

It will imho be the biggest problem of all: how do you spread this word in a world that is in control of the elite, that controls media, banks and currency. The fact that no matter all the negative news spread out, the price of one BTC stills keeps rising, gives me hope there is a chance my generation could see the very beginnings of humanity globally making their first steps in a decentralized world where value and interest is not beeing manipulated.

I think BTC is revolutionary, it's beautiful, so beautiful it can't be neglected.

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

quite the first post!

it's important to keep separate the price of Bitcoin and its status in development.

you would think they go hand in hand but that isn't always the case, and whether you believe in the revolution or not should reflect your willingness to carry the coin, as opposed to those looking for a high gain investment.

Thanks for your post, I'm relatively new to Bitcoin myself since I've discovered last year but I agree with many of your feelings and thoughts. Bitcoin it's still very much in its infancy, like the internet was in the 90s, something people talk about but they really don't understand. However there's still a long way for it to go mainstream, adoption is not as easy for common people and let's face it you can't really do much with it. Remember when we all started using the internet, there was a couple of porn images and websites and that's it. But eventually things started to pick up, amazing services like Wikipedia, Google, Amazon and so on were created. No reputable business cared or saw the potential of the internet.

Bitcoin still is in the dark, mainly because the world is ruled by a different economic system, but if a new financial crisis arrive be sure Bitcoin will gain much more traction. Remember it was conceived in the wake of the last financial bubble so I'm sure at every collapse of the current system Bitcoin will grow and evolve. Welcome to the forum!

Great post man that was a good read. I see you value bitcoin for some of the same reasons that I do, personal freedom from "the elite".

Then again, the governments and banks are reflections of ourselves, unique manifestations to each subjective witness. Light is both a particle and a wave, actually it's neither; its a probability distribution existing in a database rendered to the observer on demand.

Well, I think quite the opposite. Governments are co-opted by the big Capital, and Banks and financial conglomerates are who truly set the rules to the whole world. I strngly belive in fight of classes, like Marx desbribed. So, now people have an opportunity to take the power back.

Op, well said. We need more people like you. Bitcoin has become an investment and people forgot about life changing aspect of this technology.
It seems for now people care about high bitcoin price and nothing more. We don't have consensus regarding blocksize issue. Some developers are tired and left and bitcoin's upgrade may never happen...

Great post.  I am newish (1 year of seriousness) and enjoy hearing from those that find the technology interesting.  I am very idealistic with Bitcoin and care less about price.

I love Bitcoin

That's a brilliant first post, but how did the OP find out about bitcointalk? It took me weeks before I found it, and I initially thought it was just another forum. It took me a lot longer to figure out the guy who invented Bitcoin started it and that it's the center of the whole Bitcoin community.

it's important to keep separate the price of Bitcoin and its status in development.

you would think they go hand in hand but that isn't always the case, and whether you believe in the revolution or not should reflect your willingness to carry the coin, as opposed to those looking for a high gain investment.

This is actually a really important point what I bolded.  Though the price over time has been going up for some month (with some price corrections here and there), you have to read up on the current status of bitcoin development and recent news to get an idea of where bitcoin is going from here.

There have been some hostility amongst bitcoiners for a little while recently about developmental issues and you will commonly hear this brought up here or somewhere else talking about bitcoin as the big "block size debate".  There's a lot to understand about this kind of thing, and it's crucial that you make decisions based on how you feel and not to give into FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt).

If you want to learn more about Block sizes and the current debates that are taking place... look up Satoshi's white paper for a more general understanding of what blocks are and why/how they are mined; and also read the proposals being made by Bitcoin devs.  You can find this news being posted on Bitcoin news outlets all the time.

Understanding what's being done "under the hood" will give you (sort of) a good understanding about what's going to happen to bitcoin in the short term future.  People are going to be very opinionated about this, and it's a pretty hot topic.  All in all, I wouldn't say sell your house to get bitcoins or anything... but invest what you can afford, because at the end of the day, Bitcoin is still an experimental new currency system that has the potential of revolutionizing the global economic system.

Glad you're here! Have fun on the forum!

The price of Bitcoin and the fact that is an investment attracts people to Bitcoin. You also have to realise that.

Excellent first post, and I hope your travel down the rabbit hole will be just as good. I think a lot of people first have to use it, to realize how special it is. Once they break that barrier, things will be so much easier. Lots of people like you are out there, but they have not taken that first step.

Now the difficult part starts and that is to spread the word, and if I were in your shoes, I would first do some research to be in a better position to explain it.

When I first started looking into bitcoin, these forums were one of the first that started popping up.

No doubt that is still the case, also the huge amount of posts indicates that this is one of the central places for bitcoin information and discussion.
