I happened to notice that the number of new wallets jumped in the past two weeks from about 50K to 80K.

does anyone know why this might be?

2 options
1)influx of new users
2)a business is using blockchain as a hotwallet and created 30k random addresses

Someone trying to influence the exchange rate knowing that big a rise in these types of metrics tend to pull the price up as well?

One source of (legitimate) new users are from:
 - http://nzbsrus.com   <--- PayPal kicked them out, so now the only way its customers can subscribe is using a bitcoin.

This is not an insignificant number of subscribers.
