...did not find an announcement mailing list. How could I achieve that? Found the RSS feed

https://bitcoin.org/en/version-history

but with that it seems I do not receive an email when there would be a new item?

AFAIK There is no announce mailing list. The bitcoin-dev mailing list has the releases announced there but it also has a ton of other stuff. You could try an RSS to email service to get the RSS feed of the version history to an email.

Thanks for Your answer.
I would prefer not to be dependend of a third party for this service. I would not like to install a firefox plugin for this purpose, either.
