is this normal?

As far as I know the block come oute in every 6 minutes in avarage.

What causes this delay to generate a block?

Every 10 minutes on average.  Possible to be 2 blocks less than a second apart.  Possible to be 2 blocks 2 hours apart.  No way to predict ahead of time how long until the next block, just have to wait for it.

There was a 50-minute gap between the last two blocks at the time of writing this. Nothing unusual.

There is an average time of 10 minutes between the blocks.

Nothing "causes" the "delay" - any more than something causes "4" or "1" when you roll a die.

2013-01-09 19:44:12

Hmmm, that gets me wondering.  What has been the shortest time between blocks so far (as determined by block timestamp), and what has been the longest time between blocks so far (again as determined by block timestamp)?  Maybe I'll put together a program that will pull out the timestamps and chart how many blocks fall within various times.

The longest timestamp difference between two blocks was between the genesis block and its successor (463160s, >5 days).

The shortest timestamp difference between two blocks is 0s (between 212817-212818, for example, but there are dozens of such pairs).

The lowest timestamp difference between two blocks was between 156113 and 156114 (-7125s, almost -2 hours).

I do Bitcoin stuff.

Time stamp is based on the clock of the machine that mined the block. The protocol allows for some discrepancy, up to a predefined maximum.

No, but its timestamp is lower.

Timestamps are decided by the miner, and only have some boundary constraints (not significantly in the future, and not lower than the median of the past 11 blocks' timestamps).

Negative time differences occur all the time.

Real time doesn't matter much in bitcoin, we know the order without doubt because the later block contains info from the previous.

There are three others that took more than a day: 14-15 (87157s), 15323-15324 (90532s) and 16563-16564 (90390s).
