The renewal price seems to be nearly five times as high as the price for the first year.

Sounds like a greasy GoDaddy-esq bait and switch tactic. My recommendation is https://domains4bitcoins.com; domains registrations, transfers, limited free email with domain registration, extended email plans, Linux and Windows hosting, dedicated servers, the whole 9 yards. I'm in the process of switching most of my domain related services to them, and have been 98% satisfied with their plans.

You are right. There are two big domain providers in the web industry which are godaddy and namecheap.
But only Namecheap accepts bitcoin as payment. So, for all bitcoiners I believe namecheap is the best choice.

Haven't really tried their hosting though. but I've bought some domains from them. A lot of webmasters don't recommend having your domain and hosting on one company.

Why isn't that recommended? Couldn't think of any particular reasons it would be bad.

I used Namecheap for a small-ish team project hosting and it was flawless. Support is great as well.
